A couple of the Redbacks, Shane and Mark, remember Mark, he's the one that was very very very very ill on Saturday morning, anyway they are trying to organise an overnight ride, well a couple of overnight rides all in a row.  Part of the ride passes through your neck of the woods down to Portland.  Let me know if you are at all interested and I'll let the guys know that you may join us at Sorento.  The Treasurer and I have given a definite maybe - depends on work and money commitments.....

The only change I've suggested is instead of going through Geelong to Torquay, head through Ocean Grove-Barwon Heads.

This is approximately 339kms.

DAY FOUR
Catch ferry to Queenscliff?  (1.5-2hr trip).
Get off ferry at Queenscliff head to Geelong then to Torquay to join the Great Ocean Road.Continue on this road to Port Campbell . Again stopping for fuel and lunch.
This is approximately 256kms.

DAY FIVE
Leave Port Campbell heading west along the Great Ocean Road to Warrnambool. Join the Princess Highway to Mount Gambier riding through Port Fairy, Portland etc. This will take us into South Australia. Head north to Penola.. In Penola there are plenty of Wineries for those wishing to visit them. Stopping for fuel and lunch, as required.
This is approximately 330kms

From Penola head north to Naracoorte. Join the Wimmera Highway and head to St Arnaud via Edenhope and Horsham. Head to Wedderburn. Turn onto Calder Highway to Bendigo. Join Midland Highway then Northern Highway To Echuca. Fuel and lunch as required.

If I can be so bold, ok I am. I used to live at Portland when Alcoa was being built. Instead of staying on Hwy 1 from Portland to Mt Gambier, go via Nelson it’s a few K’s longer, but the scenery is much much better. I have not traveled that road for 20 odd years, back then it was excellent and it would run a close 2nd to gods road, in fact a lot like the Snowy Mtns Hwy. Yes that fast. And the Nelson Hotel was a good one. Watch out if you guys used the Great Ocean rd, the scenery is still great, but it’s about the only thing still great about it. Fun factor marginally better than the doom Hwy, all 80 kph. May I also suggest when heading back up north, going via the Grampians, much higher fun factors, thru to Stawell, Marybourgh, Maldon, thru to Echuca. Anything North of Penola starts to get damm right boring, whilst traveling under 200 kph.
Foot loose and fancy free.

I'd forgotten about Nelson.  We passed through there once on holiday when I was a kid - about 30 years ago.  I'll certainly pass it on.

The Treasurer just reminded me that money will be fairly tight in November.

1.  Niece getting married in September - Trip to Melbourne
2.  Eldest turning 18 late October (almost November)

Chances of me having money to go on a BIG ride in November, Buckley's.

Jeez I hate it when she's right..... :duh:  :duh:
