I'm from Canada and I sneaked into your forum basically because my best buddy is from Woolongong! (sp)
My question is - what are you gonna do about it??

Hey! My Aussie buddy swears by a restaurant in Woolong.... that has a big sign out front that proudly states, "ALL FOOD COOKED IN OIL!!"

Next time you speak with your mate ask him if he knows what NSW stands for,
If he answers New South Wales, then tell him that's typical of people from the cities.
NSW actually stands for Newcastle Sydney Woolongong. Why, because they're the only three areas of this state that get anything from the Government...

I met my buddy while working in Turkey - weird how canucks and aussies just seem to gravitate to each other - methinks we have a lot in common? Especially hatred of English poofs!

I too am a 'to and from' (pom). As for hating poofs, well I've always said
"Homosexuals don't bother me, as long as they don't bother me"
As for you Candians, I'd always thought of you blokes as Yanks who'd simply been born on the wrong side of the border :stickpoke: :stickpoke: .

Canadians like to think we're different but I just read a recent survey which shows we're not, really. There's thought going around that Americans are more brash than we are and we're nicer people, but in reality, we're not that far apart.
I just got an American transferred into my classroom and we talk about the differences all the time, so there must be something there. He's pretty cool.
Hey - I can see the origins for 'mate' but 'bloke'?? Where the heck would that come from?
Ad why a windscreen and not a windshield?? A screen would keep out the bugs but not the wind??

The only time I can tell the difference between a Yank and a Canadian is if the Yank is from the south, otherwise you all sound the same. I don't want to get in to an argument about whose 'brash' and who isn't, but below is a 'joke' that I think sums up the Aussie attitude pretty well.
There's a Texan Rancher visiting a Cattle Station (Bloody big farm) in the Northern Territory, and he says to Station owner
"My Ranch is that big that it takes me all day to ride my horse from one end to the other"
The Aussie Station owner say's
"I know what ya mean bloke, I had a horse like that too, shot the bastard".
As for the origin of BLOKE I have no idea other than to say that is the masculine of BLOKETTE.
As for Windscreen vs Windsheild, it's like you guys call it a hood and a trunk, we call them a bonnet and a boot - who knows.....

Those crazy 19th/20th Century innovators! Deep thinkers, the lot of them!
Hood/Bonnet - a covering for your head...the engine being the "head" or "front" of the car.
Trunk - a large enclosed piece of luggage...pretty much what they bolted down to the rear of early cars.
Boot - dunno (is 'boot' British for some sort of luggage or carrier?)
Windshield - shields the driver from the wind
Windscreen - screens out the wind
Clever, weren't they? :wink:
