Title: Progress report
Post by: B6mick on February 04, 2008, 04:54:56 AM
Well 3 weeks till the vet's Stone Run.
And its looking like I'm gonna be cutting it fine.
But here is some progress pic's of the REX.

Here is what used to housed in the airbox.

Now with the dual flange pods going on, I found the perfect place to mount my little air pump and punture repair kit.

Oh yes don't that front end look nice, well it looks shyte loads better than the peppered black units.

Hey Mick did you do the forks yourself? Did you replace the fork ends or did you paint them? if so what sort of paint did you use and how fine a grit sand paper, as I have to do the lowers on the Bandit as they are all pitted(to many dirt roads) thanks Graham

They is the orginal and they was black painted jobs. Hand polished from 80 grit, 120 grit 240, just to work out the casting marks and pits then 400 600 800 1200 1500 2000 then on to the pedestal polish wheel, and autosol liquid to finish. about 24 hrs labour in those 2 suckers.

But shyte you not they look even better than the pic shows.

What officer you want my finger prints. Ha, best of luck there sir.

If you was to use the K&N oil filter, you wouldn't need a special tool.
They come with a handy 12 nut on the front.
If ya go to the K&N site, look up ya part number at order it at your local parts store, stuff the stealer dealer.

Same filter as the air cooled 1200 & 600 and the oil cooled GSXR's KN138 in black or KN138c for chrome.

is that a suggestion for the gymkhana???? - we used to have a 'rally rat' comp but it sort of fell out of favour after a couple of years - the same person won it 3 years running.

Looks good Mick, alot a work and elbow greese. Did you do the rims at the same time or did you already have that done.

I did the rims about 2 and a half years back, I really need to hit them again, but I should only need to hit them with 600 up to 2000.

Try a Bandit back wheel, that took me near 18 hrs to do.
The day before a TV show down here (two wheel torque channel 30 something) did a rap on OCD racing, and of course the Bandit did a feature. All night, polishing, no sleep and got the bike there 20 minutes before the filming started.

Couldn't even curl up in the corner of the workshop, they filmed that too. :taz:

 :bigok: Looks nice!

24 hours to run those legs thru 10 processes - sounds pretty fast to me.  That's barely an hour per step per leg at that rate - I know I couldn't accomplish that finish that quick. (And that's why mine are still stock - with the blemishes that come from riding it all these years.)

Now the back ends getting the treatment, still waiting on the carby jet kit, and I’ve got 1 week and 1 day to have it back on the road for the Vietnam Vets, Stone run and Bike show. Just about to hit the panic button.

No she’s not nearly finished it’s a bit of a mock up dummy run, and we had a bit of a bummer day yesterday, we as in me, totally stuffed no 3 inlet rubber carb holder.
I’ve kinda got wishful thinking that I’ll get a replacement part before Friday, but the reality is I’m gonna be missing the Vietnam Vets, Stone run and Bike show.
I need the bike running for Monday to get the bike around to the engineer to make the fork brace come guard mount.

But it is looking much better than before that’s for sure. Not a show winner yet, but enough to make a few heads turn for another look.

I require a stage 3, and they sent a stage 2 :taz: :taz: :taz:

 :bomb: :bomb: :bomb: :bomb:

So yep I'm back infront of the puter feeling pretty damn pissed off, good news, well if ya can call it good news, well we are in the middle of a huged assed drought, its gonna rain saturday, when the run and show I was going to be going to. hmmm still don't make me feel any betta....... *#*#  *#*#  *#*# another 3 weeks to get the right jet kit *#*# :bomb: need more  :beers:

Yes after priming the carbs project REX finally lives, in fact it fired really easy and idled real nice after just a couple of minutes, sounds sweet too.

Its all finished, today I fitted up the long overdue fork brace come guard mounting bracket, just need to get some 25mmx 100mm Alum angle to make a finishing cover for it.
It was nice to ride with a front guard, and not have to worry bout the cops.

Been for a short ride, I mean short after 10min the hernias are starting to kick like hell. And even after just a couple of corners I could feel a very positive effect to the REXS handling.
So combined with the work Krooztune did on the front forks, the REX has transformed from a bike that I was not totally pleased with, to now one of my all time favorites, just behind the B6.

Of course nothing is ever really finished, cause, with a whole lot of alli plate left over, a set of rearsets is halfway made, as I type this.
Your right I just carn't help myself.

Ooophs, lastest update,,,,,,
Just got back from a 3 hr pre operation ride.........
Did I write on my last post, one of my favorite motorcycles just behind the B6.
Wow its neck and neck now. It handles,,,,,,,, the pig of pigs sure as cockatoo pooh, handles bloody great, and is so well behaved even in the roughest corners, where you point it, it goes. Add to that tractor factor of the engine now the buggers getting the right air fuel mixtures. Why the hell Kawasaki didn't fit a fork brace on its stock REXs has got me beat.
