Title: Cigar Run!
Post by: PeteSC on March 14, 2005, 01:11:58 AM
I'll be spending a couple of days around Willville next month to plot out some rides.
How many Cigar smokers are there out there?
How many people would be interested in working a stop at J and R Cigars in Statesville into a ride?

Cigar Smokers would  go nuts there, and the prices are very good.
Down side, it would probably mean maybe an hour of less than twisty roads to get there, and an hour to get back to the twisties.
(Part of the trip there would be twisty)

Maybe an real early start, maybe 7, and a stop for breakfast on the way to JR?   We could be in/out of the cigar place and back on good roads by 10 am or so.....

  Just wondering.....

Pete,

Smoking cigars and the use of other tobacco products is gross, disgusting, unhealthy and is only done by total degenerates!  Yes, that means count me in!

Figured you'd chime in.....

I didn't want to stop there as I passed it on the way home.  I swear, the pickup got off exit 50 on I-77 all by itself.  I was screaming...'No..I have enough cigars at home!   NO!!!"
The truck rolled into the parking lot, the door popped open....well, I had to go in!

I'll try to work out a route that will get us there without spending too much time on boring roads, but I'm afraid there'll be
some getting there, and a little less getting out of there.

I'm thinking an early beeline to Statesville, a stop at the store, maybe a quick breakfast on the way, and then head northwest up to Wilkesboro, and jump on the BRP.

There's a good Bojangles on I77 for a quick stop for an inexpensive breakfast,  maybe 30 miles away from JR.  (Coffee!)

I don't smoke either, Kevin...come to think of it, I don't drink anymore (Im still working on gluttony with little success)...I have done enough of both to know that I now choose not to do either...However; I still ride like a hooligan and will ride long distances to watch other people spend their money in a manner that I believe to be foolish...so, you and and I will laugh and point when the cigar smokers exit the tobacco shop all giggly from the sensory overload... :bigok:  ....apologies to any smokers that are now, or may be in the future, offended... :monkeymoon:

I received my good looking tee shirts, stickers and coffee mug this morning...talk about quick shipping...excellent....one, fairly serious complaint..the coffee mug has a mug on it that is going to require me to use it left handed....I know that I will forget and use it in my normal right handed fashion...what should I do then...therapy?...seek religion?....cut my right hand off so that it never happens again?

edited to add:  difficult to joke to an unseen audience....the coffee mug graphic has a small likeness of the webmaster's face on the "drinking side" for right handers...so, in the act of bringing the cup up to drink you are looking directly into the webmaster's eyes, almost lip to lip if you will...I believed it to be humorous (and still do)....I was in no way impugning the quality of the cup....it's a damn good cup with excellent graphics...I may buy another.... :beers:

Which mug did you order, Sloper? was it one with a graphic on one side, only?

JR Tobacco also has a very strange assortment of 'outlet' type merchandise, also.   Some of it is real junk, some of it not bad.
This will give the non-smokers something to look at.   They usually have some clothing from the local mills.....shirts...socks....etc.  Some books.....a lot of strange 'bric a brac'.  (NO, not adult relationship 'implements'!)

That would be the one Pete.....jokes aside, I really like everything that I ordered....I'm wearing the, freshly washed, yellow bandito shirt and drinking coffee from my mug... :thanks:

Hey Sloper,
I made up that  'Webmonsters Beer Fund' graphic as kind of a joke!
I think you're the only person who's actually bought something with it on it!   I'm not sure if you're supposed to feel 'special'.........or gullible....

 :duh:
If I can figure out a route that will take us by JR on a ride, it will be worth it.  It's probably a little out of the way for 'non smokers', and may not be worth working into a ride.   I think at best, it would mean an hour of boring roads to get there, (out of maybe 1 3/4 hour ride to get there from Willville) and a hour or less to get on good roads after leaving there.
(Maybe heading to Boone from JR)

Some of you may pass close to JR on the way to the Rally.   It's off of I-77, the first exit south of I-40  in NC.

I bought it to help support the site (hear that slackers?)..gullible? Oh hell yes, on many levels...that I was able to make (to me!) a joke out of it was a plus.  I'm actually growing quite fond of it .......I can make any road a fun road with little effort.....I may buy a cigar and actually smoke it while sipping on a glass of Johnnie Walker Blue Label...but I doubt it.....at least the Scotch part......I'm riding to Lakeland for Sun n Fun, health permitting, so I will probably trailer to The Blue Ridge.  The older I become, the more gear I require for camping.  Should I contact the camp ground owner about parking?

The owner claims there's adequate parking, but I haven't really seen it.
It may be there, but not convenient.
I figured I'd encourage people to ride in to avoid any problems.
I'm not sure there's room for 20 tow vehicles......but I could be wrong.
Dammit, you did have to mention Sun 'n' fun!

(Been threatening to go for years...)
Title: Cigar run, Friday or Saturday?
Post by: PeteSC on May 04, 2005, 08:15:00 AM
What day would you like to ride to JR?

About a third of the ride down will be nice, with actually some pleasant riding between Mt. Airy, and Elkins on US 601.
We'd take 614 south from Meadows of Dan, which is 10-15 miles of great road, then make our way to jump in I-77 near Elkins, and ride the interstate the last 35 miles or so.
A breakfast stop could me made on the way, if we start like at 0730.

From JR, we'd have an hour of somewhat boring (not twisty) roads to get back into the hills, and jump on the BRP near Blowing rock.

7:30.....IN THE MORNING :?: ....are you telling me that there is a 7:30 in the morning just as in the evening?....and people are up and about?....ahaaa retirement, how soon we forget.....do we have to smoke cigars for breakfast?.......I hear something in the garage calling my name....cya on The Blue Ridge....

well, Lynn, like all rally events, they actually cook off a little later than planned.
I figured if we leave 0730-800, we'd have time to stop for breakfast, still get to JR for an half hour, and back up in the hills by 11-12.
We could leave 8-830, and be OK, but we'd hit more 'weekend' traffic if we did the trip on Saturday.  No big deal.... :beers:

I want to see you ride in on your new 'Busa, Lynn!

We'll have a wheelchair ready for you!
(I may need one, too.  Turned 50 a couple of weeks ago, and it's like the warranty expired on all my joints, the day after!)

No big deal.   Some people come unglued when rides don't start on schedule.

A lot of people don't get to ride on anything other than 'flat' roads except when they wander far from home.
I'm trying to limit the time spent on 'flat' roads for the cigar run to as little as possible.
Even the 'flat' stuff is through pleasant countryside.....could be worse!

The only challange that I'm going to accept is to eat a Uncle Hershel's Breakfast at Cracker Barrel.  I'm pretty damn fast through a bowl of grits...leaning way over to slice my ham....and I'll betcha that grape jelly on my biscuit is sticker than your Bridgestones......Just went out and looked, I now have Bridgestones...Battlax something or others....so, if that's your challange then I accept.. :beers:

Hey Lynn, I think Pete's trying to get us in trouble here. I'm old and slow.

I do like your choice of eateries though. My favorite is the country fried steak with lots of gravy. Just what a diabetic like me needs  :duh:

Wytheville, VA store is about 52 miles from The Meadows of Dan...make it a bit over twenty minutes in overdrive....on second thought , I'm not that hungry...make it about an hour away... I did not believe that you could get that far away from a Cracker Barrel in the southeast...

we could probably do lunch one day at Cracker Barrel.
I think a  ride going through Wytheville, up 52 across Big Walker, and along the VA/WV line on 61 is somewhat planned.  ( Or some variation...)

On the 'cigar' run, a breakfast stop 'anywhere' is in order.
We'll pass through Mt. Airy, and there is probably a good local place.....

This may not be 'good', but it's 'famous'..............

Oh yeah!

Sounds like a diabetic's nightmare, though.

It's funny- up here in the Northeast, I've got 3 of them w/in an hour and I drive right by one every day.  I haven't been in one since the last time I was in NC.
