04 Bandit 1200 grips
« on: October 20, 2005, 06:13:58 PM »
I just finished reading the last post regarding grips.  I noticed that I will probably have to buy grips and then wrip off the ends to get them to slide and fit onto the handlebars.  Has anyone changed the grips on their 1200, and if so, what are the best ones to get in terms of comfort.  I know gel grips are usually comfortable, but I am also looking for something larger in diameter due to me having long basketball fingers.  Thanks everyone!

I have large hands and therefore the same problem as you.  I've tried 2 different kind of allegedly "gel" grips and found them wanting.  The diameter of them isn't really any more than the stockers, and when you have long fingers it's hard to grip without your fingers overlapping.  If this is what they consider 'gel'.... they can keep 'em.

I really would like to find some big cushy ones, but they seem to be a thing of the past.

The ones I've found with the biggest diameter are those dense  foam type grips.   They only last a couple fo years, but you can usually find them for $5 a pair.
I'll try to find the brand name....

Grab On Grips is another one that makes the fat foam grips.

The last grips I put on were Johar foam grips. They are very similar to Grab-ons. I like them fairly well but it is getting cooler and I have been thinking about grip heaters and didn't think the foam grips would work well with them.

I like the Sun-Line Grand Touring grip.  FDennis Kirk <www.denniskirk.com> carries them  They're somewhat barrel shaped, larger in diameter than gel grips and being solid rubber absorb vibration form the road AND the bike fairly well.

I'm using them with Manic Salamander bar end weights and had to cut out the ends, an easy job with a sharp knife.

They're very "tacky" and don't lose grip in the rain -- and my electric handlebar heaters work well with them too.

Lot's of different grips will fit but a word of caution, you will have to do some dremel work on the throttle tube to accomidate aftermarket grips. Suzuki put a few protruding plastic pieces on there to stop the grip from possible slippage. These grind off easily. (You will know what I mean when you get the old ones off.)

I put gell grips on mine, and to tell you the truth, they are no better than stock.

I did have the foam grips on my Honda which are very comfortable but suck if you do any riding in the rain as the absorb water. Best to get rid of vibes though.

Some comfy gloves with gel inserts in the palm would probably work, too.  That's what I do.
