2005 GSXR Front Fairing on a '97 1200 Bandit
« on: January 22, 2006, 03:34:14 PM »
Fell into some salvaged AMA race skins off a '05 GSXR-1000 from a couple friends.  They need some work, but I thought it would be a fun project to work on this spring before track season.

I thought some of you might be curious, so I am posting some initial pictures of the carbon-fiber sitting on the frame.  I do not have the mounts made for it yet, but I am reusing the original front fairing bracket off the 1200s.  I will not have to modify the bracket at all, I should be able to make some spacers and drill a couple holes into the fairing for the support.

I don't have my clipons yet, but I think that will help the fairing blend in better to the bike.  Lots of work needed on this if I want to make it work, but I think I am going to give it a try.

I have the tail section too, but unfortunately, that piece would not fit well.  Which is a real bummer, b/c those GSXR subframes on the latest GSXRs are sweet!

Very interesting. I have thought of swapping a GS1200SS or early GSXR twin headlight fairing onto the B12 to give it a more retro 1980's look and add clearance for my clip-on bars.

Keep us posted on your project.

Good Luck, Ed.

I don't recall where it is, but I posted a pic of a bandit with the top half of a gixxer fairing.  It looked pretty sweet.

Kinda like this:

That bodywork has got to bolt up to the B12 as the frame looks identical to a 1G B12 frame.

Man, I want one of those.

I love the GS1200SS's front fairing, but I can't say that I love the twin shocks, cheaper looking rear swingarm and the slabby looking tail bodywork.

No, it was a newer more pointy front fairing.  I will see if I can find it again.

The '97 bandit now looks like a 2005 bike and must have some higher top speed now too.....
I was looking for the new Kawa ZX10 fairing, but obviously the GSXR looks a lot better.

Jwalters - that looks awesome.  Hope it works out for you.  I thought of doing the same with my B4.  I actually bid on some rashed up Gixxer track bodywork on ebay but didn't win.

Ya mean like an early 90s Gix?

Or more like the mid 80s..

I love that old twin beam look.

I think that is the one I was looking for.  That is definitely the type of fairing that I was referring too.

I've made some progress on my ferring mod.  I went ahead and chopped off the lower section of the ferring, leaving the engine exposed.  In  the way I chopped it, it looks like an SV 1000 front end, best part is, it clears my low clip-ons!  The ferring was in pretty rough shape, so no better time to do my first fiber-glass/bondo bodywork.

I basically reenforced the entire inside of the ferring, since there were many cracks and broken bits.  I also wanted to strengthen the shell, since I will be mounting it in a way the designer had not intended.

As you can see, there was a LOT of work that was needed, but for a free ferring, you can't go wrong!

I am not looking for this to be perfect, its just a trackday skin, but I figured I would keep working on it, so I could learn something in the process.  There are some runs from the primer, which I have sanded out, but all in all, its turning out quite well.  And I'm quite happy with my first do-it-yourself bodywork.

I'll make sure to post pics once I get it mounted and painted.  I also have a GSXR double bubble windscreen that should be here soon, blacked out of course!

I got the ferring painted.  I am just waiting on the zero gravity double bubble windscreen to show up, then I can drill my mounting holes and finish up the ferring.

The white part of the fairing looks good.  :bigok:
The red part looks a little rough.

(I know this is a race part)

You're correct sir.  It has some rough spots.  I already had spent way too much time on it, considering it was almost in two pieces when I got it, I had to do a LOT of fiberglass work.  Besides, it looks good enough for the girls I go out with.

I might redo part of it next winter, but I have bigger fish to fry before my trackday date of May 13 @ Black Hawk Farms.  I still have to get some shorter brake lines for my clipons, tires, and safety wire some stuff.  I can't spend any more time on the fairing.

By the way, here is a picture of my "Shop" I work in.  Pretty nice, eh?  Lots of room to work.

When I had a 1-car garage, it used to look like that, so my next place had a 2-car garage. Didn't take long for it to look like that either. Next place had a 2-car garage with the back wall kicked out and extended to make it two cars deep on one half and ~1/2 car's worth of workbench space (so it was a 3.5 car garage, but looked like a 2-car from the street). Before you know it, cluttered. Now I have a 30x36 shop with a 12x30 second floor storage. Yup, you guessed it, you can barely walk thru the place.

I need to go on a cylinder reduction plan... but I don't want to.
