Vibes With New Chain & Sprockets
« on: June 29, 2007, 05:24:53 PM »
Just replaced chain and sprockets at 47,300 miles (OEM, too..  :bigok: ) and now there's a pretty bad vibration in the foot pegs above 3,800 rpm.  It really gets your feet to tingling after a 100 miles or so.  Prior to the change-out everything was pretty smooth save the harmonic vibe we are all familiar with.

Any ideas on what to look for???  I tightened the sprockets (OEM counter-sprocket with dampener) to spec, bent over the washer, torqued speed sensor to spec, chain is on the loose side.  It's enough to make put the old sprocket set on but the counter-sprocket looks like a Ninja throwing star.

I'll pull the cover tonight and look for anything unusual but thought I'd post up for ideas first.

Yup.... rear sprocket is aligned real well.

Funny thing about the old counter-sprocket... it was on less than finger tight.  The only thing keeping from backing off was the lock washer - no breaker bar needed.

Still got the vibes?  Maybe we left a beer can in there?

Does the new front sprocket have a rubber damper on it like the stock one? Most don't and that can cause the change you mentioned.

Got the OEM sprocket from the dealer with the rubber dampening - that's why I'm so surprised.  I did remove the cover tonight and checked things over.   I didn't see anything out of place and put it back together - seems a little better now.  Perhaps I had something in a bind when I put the cover on initially.

Perhaps we've had so much rain I forgot what riding was like.... :storm:

I guess that's possible but that's also why we worked on my bike first.   :stickpoke:

BTW - my neato little hitch pin clip on the rear axle nut is gone, Dave.... did you take it?????  :annoy:

I remember taking it off (wrong BTW) but don't remember putting it back on.  I think I was on my 10th beer by then....

 :boohoo:

I'll check my pockets when I get home.

I don't see how the cover could have been in a bind or how that could do what you described.  It does not come in contact with anything that's moving.  If I had to guess, I'd say that your countershaft splines are worn a tad from 47K on that loose sprocket.  Now you have a tighter fit with the new sprocket and thats producing a different feel.  Most bandits buzz some 3800 to 4500 rpm.

Sooooo... do you think I oughta loosen the nut and recrimp the washer????   :waryeye:

Well... thanks for the replies guys - I'll just ride the snot out of it.  Maybe all the new stuff just needs a little break-in mileage.   :bandit:
