What are people using to lube the chain on your 1250? The service manual says 90w motor oil. What about those wax lubes?
-
Given that it uses a 'normal' bike chaing, then I'd assume that you could use whatever you've used in the past.
let the flood gates open :yesno: :stickpoke:
-
The older Bandits use oil-based lubes but these new fandangled Bandits use water-based everything.

Fit a chain oiler sorted.
-
I've always just used wd-40 with no ill effects.

This is almost as bad as an oil thread... some are attached to sentimental favorites.
This thread in the General Motorcycle FAQ (http://forums.banditalley.net/viewtopic.php?t=309) covers the subject pretty well though and includes the results from a shootout test between 21 chain lubes, plus WD-40. No brand of chain wax made the recommended list and FWIW, WD-40 came in #19.

Sigh. :duh: Everyone always destroying my favorites with scientific data and testing. Especially with the only motorcycle magazine I have a subscription to. :bandit: Guess i'll be checking out the PJ1 Black.

WD40 will kill o rings too.
-
It should not "harm" the o-rings, but it will not provide sufficient lubrication for long term life.
WD40 will kill o rings too
WD 40 is basically kerosene or similar deorderized solvent with some smell improvement. No different than washing you chain with a solvent. BUT kerosene, solvent or WD40 does NOT provide much lubrication.
OK to use any to clean the chain, but then I would recommend an decent chain lube after cleaning.

I put 24k on my cbr1100xx chain using only wd-40 as a cleaner. WD-40 will NOT damage the o-rings at all.

The Honda Red can with teflon/moly (which is great stuff) has been discontinued. The manufacturer still evidentally makes it, but it would be under a different label (honda no longer using them as a supplier). Its gonna be difficult finding out who makes the stuff-cos its awesome!
I ordered 3 cans from http://www.worldofpowersports.com/cgi-bin/wop/08209-013HP.html (as you cant get this stuff in Canada) and they sent me 3 cans of the Bell ray Blue cans instead (the white stuff). They didnt even tell me it was no longer available!
Apparantly, and due to (it felt like the guy was reading a script) "environmentally conscious initiatives" that "honda" is now taking in an effort ot be "more green".
I see its also shown on the honda site...
powersports.honda.prochainlube but it seems like these guys dont employ the services of a full-time webmaster , because if they did, they would maintain the "current" product inventory and the listings would be accurate and up to date!.

Being that O ring chains can't really be oiled all you need to do is WD40 your clean chain "Regularly".
My FZ1 has 100,007 kilometres on it and has used two chains in that time using only WD40 which is all we ever used when racing.
My chain gets a spray about 3 times weekly and I keep a can in my bag in the event of long wet rides.
PS I pick up my new Bandit in September to go alongside my much loved and HIGHLY modded FZ1

Olive oil is great...keeps your pipes clean of blockages and makes it smell like you're delivering pizza.
OK, I should be shot. :stfu:
-
wax, yuck. Repsol chain lube, great.
-
:welcome: Cookie..glad to see you over here along with KenB
yep..same Ferret from the FZ1 forum here
-
HiYa Ferret, Yup just ordered my 1250 for delivery on 15th Sept to compliment my aging but beautiful 2003 Bee.
Going to retire my FZ for weekend rides and track days and use the Bandit for commuting and two up touring.
Fizzy has 100,000 Klicks on it now and though the bike is in perfect condition I will use it for fun rather than insult it with day to day commuting which the Bandit will do with consummate ease.

I'd say you made a wise choice and both will serve you well in their intended capacities. Bet it feels good to back in the saddle again eh?

Too right mate.
As of yesterday I have put some 5000 Kms on the old fizzy since the 9th August so i look foward to wearing out the Bandit soon.

cookie99 - I'll be interested to hear your impressions of the 1250 versus the FZ1. I rode a 1st gen FZ1 for a season and liked it a lot. Lots of spirit in that girl! But as much as I liked it, I like the Bandit better. Better ergo's for my frame, more usable/accessible torque, and seems to have a better build quality to it. Can't wait to hear your comparison! Cheers!

Ken the bikes are different animals indeed.
FZ1 is bike 51 for me so I have a broad range of bikes to compare from.
Value for money the Bandit wins hands down but if you like me with more metal in me than the Sydney Harbour Bridge the FZ1 is an old man's sport bike that can kick R1's asses provided the rider of the R1 runs on Testosterone and not experience.
On the FZ I have embarrassed many a 919 owner countless young bucks on R1's and Gixers without too many problems.
To ride the FZ to its capabilities you need to be happy drifting a bike and with the superb handling of modern sports bikes it appears to be a dying art.
I would not put that sort of work to the bandit as its suspension is rather "pedestrian" compared to the FZ and mine is well modded , but the Bandit motor is well up to the task and I suspect the frame is as good as the FZ so when I throw out the rear shock and have a good hard look at the front end I will give you a further report.
Different bikes and there is nothing wrong with that, I tried and did not like the Gen 2 FZ, despite the different chassis I did not like its handling. On my gen 1 I can just about take some metal off the Titanium Yoshi in the twisties at Phillip Island (No center stand) and worn out a few knee sliders there as well.
I will take the Bandit to a track day at Phillip Island soon to test its limits safely and report on what I find (alternately read the obituaries in the Melbourne Age newspaper) :boohoo:
