I want to swap to clip ons .. just need to know what the correct size for my 01 forks?
-
B6 is 41mm
B12 is 43 mm
Be sure you have tank clearance!
-
I read somewhere that the bigger problem is clearing the fairing on S models.
I assume it depends on the clipons, but it may not work.
-
i changed to clipons and love it .clearence is not a problem at the fairing i got clamps and upper tree from a katana(that doesnt work without the lower)all i used from them was the fork clamps. my bike is a 99 b6.i love the new look and riding position

post some pictures if you can.
I'm sure many people will be interested.

Several aftermarket vendors (Vortex comes quickly to mind), or any bike that came with clipons and has 43mm forks.

clicky>>> (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4570224310&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT)

There's another ebay set here. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/zrx1100-bandit-1200-rf900-clipons-clipon-handlebars-43m_W0QQitemZ4569078285QQcategoryZ35587QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
But the Blackbird ones in the post above are a better deal price wise and would sit a little higher for better fairing and tank clearance.
-
Ive looked at the pictures and I think they fasten to the forks.
But at the risk of looking stupid, what are they and what do they do.

They replace the tubular handlebars with bars that "clip on" to the fork tubes instead... the standard fare of the repli-racer bikes as well as many SPORT-tourers.

Pro Tek 43mm clip-ons on my '05 B12S. Absolutely love them, they were on the bike before it hit 50 miles as I hated the stock bar.

Those Pro Tek's look very nice! :bigok:
Seems you could have accomplished the same riding position with a pair of swept drag bars - which I'm guessing would be less $$ outlay.

The caption from the first link above:
Pro Tek 43mm clip-ons. Raise fork tubes 1.5in in the triples and you have an attachment point for the clip-ons above the top triple. absolutely no ground clearance issues. The bike steers much quicker and the riding position is sporty and comfortable.
If I had a B12, I'd want clips too. Droping the front 1.5 inches seems like A LOT, though. I'd think that if you did a Busa shock or something that raised the tail at all, you'd get twitchy handling. No?
-
1.5" drop up front does seem like a lot. Don't know that it's any different from a handling standpoint than a 1.5" tail lift, but at least with the tail lift you don't sacrifice ground clearance.
I agree, any tail lift in addition to this much fork change would probably be unwise.
-
I don't see any reason to lift the tail. The stock B12 already sits nose high, the 1.5in drop did not affect ground clearance at all. I have pushed the stock Michelins as far as I dare without any clearance issues under cornering or very heavy braking. The only caution is under lock-to-lock steering, as in parking, you have to be careful as the bars get close on the fairing. Actual riding is unaffected unless you are crashing.
I have been riding bikes with clip-ons for 20+ years, they feel natural on the B12. You counter steer easily and use rider weight to flick the bike side to side. It is not twichy at all, after coming off a TL1000S, it is rock solid. I do run Race Tech aftermarket springs as I like the front end stiff. But, this is not a commuter bike but a toy to blast around on.
I did not like the tubular bar at all- not only the bar but the way it mounted as well. It did not feel right and required too much steering imput. I got a smoking deal on my 2005 that justified making the changes ASAP. I could not be happier with the setup. Next plan is for Michelin Pilot or Dunlop 208's ,Mikuni RS carbs, and drop-in cams.

I reckon clip ons look alot better, more neat and give a slightly sportier riding position. But if you're doing long journeys you want to be sat upright. Personally (when I get my B12 next year!) I'll be investing in some clip ons

Suburban Machinery has hand made bars that give the look and feel of clipons without the replacement. Check them out here:

Now you can use those holes from the handlebar mounts for GPS & radar detector mounts.
Looks nice! :bigok:
-
Thanks, and great idea- I was thinking twin 30 caliber machine guns for the cell phone talking SUV drivers that are everywhere here in Dallas.
-
Twin 30's might give too much head shake, but two holes should make for a more solid mount for a single 30...
Or a grenade launcher.
