Author Topic: 2000 B12 - Turn Signal Bulbs (or Lamps) (Read 3350 times)

I have a 1st Gen Bandit 1200 and want to change the front turn signals (or indicators) to clear lenses and LED bulbs. I want to use the stock housings and just change the lenses and bulbs. [I think this will be more visible in traffic than LED flush mount indicators]

I searched here and googled but cannot get the bulb type. I have checked the Suzuki and Haynes manuals and the type of bulb is not listed either. (This must be super secret or a really dumb question

)

Anyone happen to know this off the top of their head? TIA

Bulbs are standard automotive 1156 in the OEM blinkers.

I just pulled the OEM blinker to install replacement bulbs and the original lamps read this way around the metal ring "TUNGSRAM 11057 12V P21W". The replacement lamps aren't working. Was buying replacements assuming an 1156 incorrect?

Maybe I jumped the gun a little since I was going by my 2G's blinkers. The 2G uses 1156 bulbs - single element, single contact, with evenly spaced locking pins. I just assumed the earlier ones would be the same internally, despite their different external looks. If the 1G sockets made for staggered pin bulbs and have two contacts, then 1157 would be the right ones.

You can always take one of your bulbs down to the auto parts store and look for something that matches your config.

I was buying right angle LEDs from superbriteleds.com so taking them to the store wasn't an option

Maybe I will go to the autoparts store to confirm the bulb type if I place another order. Does the 11057 around the ring of the current bulb mean 1157? The LED bulbs tips look identical to the ones I have but the odds of getting two broken ones seems unlikely.

Have you tried to power your new LED bulbs with some jumper wires?

If their config is the same as what you took out, they should work.

Turns out that my Jeep Wrangler uses the same bulb/lamp for its reverse lights as the Bandit blinkers - so I can use it for testing.

* I was able to swap a reverse lamp from the Wrangler to the Bandit turn signal successfully. It lights.
* I was able to swap the new LED lamp to the Wrangler turn signal successfully. It lights.
* I was UNABLE to successfully swap the LED to the Bandit turn signal though. LED lamp fits but it does not light.

A = B and B = C ... but ... A does not = C ? I am confused.

Any suggestions?

More than likely. Look at the bottom of the bulb.

1156 = single element, single contact on the bottom, and symmetrical posts

1157 = dual element, dual contact on the bottom, and asymmetrical posts.

Remember, the 1156's will only light when your turn signal is on.

Got a pic of the bulb you are using (take it from the bottom)

The 1157 has two "dots" on the bottom.
The 1156 has a single "dot" on the bottom.

All bulbs I have (turn signal from car, turn signal from Bandit and LEDs I purchased) have 1 "dot".
The size of the "caps" look the same too - same height, circumference etc.

I am turning on the indicators/turn signals for testing since the bulbs are only lit when the turn signals are active. (I am testing in the left turn signal so I insert the bulb and then pretend I am making a left turn in my garage)

If I didn't know that LEDs require less power than incandescent lamps to operate I would guess it is related to current draw or voltage.

Now that I know the new LEDs were not damaged when they arrived (they work in my car) I can't think of a reason they don't work on the Bandit.

Throw the old bulbs in the Bandit and make sure they still light. That SHOULD tell you if a wire is loose etc. You never know.

Other than that I have no clue. Unless the LED bulb is just off by a little bit and it is not making good contact with the socket.

Flip the turn signal and wiggle the bulb around. Does that do anything?

It could be that the bulb and the wiring is fine, but the LED doesn't draw enough power, so your bike thinks the bulb is burned out.
The fix is a load equalizer.

I already installed the ELFR-1 as part of my LED upgrade. http://www.customdynamics.com/trick_flasher.htm#Standard_DOT_Flasher

I have an LED tail light with integrated signals and the signals blinked too fast. So I installed the ELFR-1 and everything is good now in the rear.

Originally I got flush mount LEDs for the front but I think I want the stalks with LED bulbs instead for greater visibility in traffic. The flush mount blended a little too well - so I went back to the stock lights and stalks waiting for the LED replacement bulbs to arrive.
