Title: Everything old becomes new again...
Post by: jbrough7 on June 05, 2006, 09:40:55 AM
Long ride coming up shortly and I wanted to do something about the fairing on the Bandit.  Love the look but the wind hits me right in the chest so it is quite useless.

I've still got my old fairing from my cruiser days so I kept thinking of cutting it down and screwing it on to the existing fairing, but thought not.

So....get the idea of putting the old fairing on right behind the present one.  Cut her a bit and she fit pretty well!

Kept approximately the same angle as the real fairing.  The new/old one goes up about six inches above that one.  Clearance was fine every which way.

So how was it?  Mixed reviews.  It sure keeps the wind off my chest but directs everything straight at my helmet so there is a lot of buffeting.  Still, it's not the kind of buffeting that feels like somebody is riding behind you and slapping you alternately on each side of your noggin.

Get home today and I think I'll put her straight up so there won't be as much room between the two fairings.  Maybe that will do the trick.

Oh, and the look of the bike is actually kinda cool, BTW.

That's a different solution.  I'd like to see a pic of that, Jim.

My mental image if you and your bike just get weirder and weirder.  Please please please post a pic!

I would love to but I parked my digital camera in the drive last night and I went out a half hour later and it was laying on its side!

Oh, yeah!  Then my son backed over it while I was screaming in the background for him to stop.

Then I thought I would develop a new lens cover because the old one.....you get the idea.

FWIW - the Bandit's screen isn't intended to give Gold Wing-like wind protection. From your description, your fix sounds pretty tacky, even though you say it looks OK.

There is an aftermarket screen available for the 3G 650/1200 from Secdem of France:

Their North American distributor is Clary Sports (http://www.clarysports.com/main.cfm?p=000&l=en) in Quebec.

Title: windscreen

would you really want to buy something that comes from france?

The AP and UPI reported that the French Government announced after the London bombings that it has raised its terror alert level from Run to Hide. The only two higher levels in France are Surrender and Collaborate. The rise in the alert level was precipitated by a recent fire which destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively disabling their military.

I think it's good, Red, cuz I can actually see if extended will help me before purchasing.  I'm onto Clary and they're $170 plus tax plus shipping so it's over $200.  A good price if the windscreen works, but I'm not sure it will.  It's only four inches higher!

You know what my bike looks like right now?  Think of a naked bandit and an S version...in my mind, I never saw a lot of similarity before.  But now, with this windshield on the bars, I can actually see a naked bike 'growing' out of the S version.  It's kinda cool.

I'm putting the new/old fairing up more upright tonight to see what that does.  That is my exciting Monday evening (after mowing the grass!)

Take care.

Addendum:  No good.  With the windscreen up high there is a ton of disturbance behind it unless I slouch down and that sucks!  It's coming off with no pics!  BTW, son says it looks (I quote) Utterly Ridiculous!!  Why did the fashion gene skip me?? :crybaby:  :crybaby:  :crybaby:

try dynamohumm.com, I got a 1st gen Secdem for about $130US a couple years ago, I think they're near Montreal. Loved the screen, broke it and bought a blue one on ebay.

While the 3G Secdem is only 4" taller, it looks like it has a steep kick to it on the upper edge that should do a LOT to move air for you.
