I put this question up on the old board, but didn't have a chance to save, so here we go again...

I have some rust on my 1GB6. Nothing major, but also not something I'm too happy with. Can anyone give me some tips on the best way to get rid of it?

I remember that thread but can't remember what part on your bike was rusting. The two options regardless are mechanical removal or chemical removal. Mechanical means can be as simple as Emory cloth (wet-dry sandpaper) with a little oil or as complex as sandblasting it off. Chemical treatments like Navel Jelly or even WD-40 may work too.

One thing to do is to treat the area afterward to prevent additional rust from forming. A product called Penetrol can be brushed over the cleaned area and rust will not come back. It actually bonds with the rust. A professional painter recommends this stuff and I have had good results too. You should be able to find it at Home Despot - look for an orange quart can.

Post a pic of the rusty areas and we might be more specific on the best removal method.

Thanks txbanditrydr! The rust that I have is on the frame right by where the rear foot pegs are, kind of right in the middle of that little triangle that's back there. I figure I'll sand it down and treat it afterwards, just to make sure that it doesn't come back.

Would you know a good site to order paint?

I also have what looks like rust, but it is on the engine fins. The previous owner kept the bike outside in San Fran for a few months so the wet air made the engine look a little old. It's like a white rust...will this same stuff you mentioned work on my ride?

The white stuff is aluminum oxide... aluminum's equivalent to rust. Color-Rite is the outfit that makes touchup paint for motorcycles, and that's probably not the place to go for engine paint. Corrosion removal processes are still similar, sand it and paint it.

cool...thanks for the info. I will see if i can find out where to get the engine paint from too once I am done.
