I have been playing with the gearing on my 96 b6 and was wondering if I could fit a taller tire than the stock size of 150/70/17. Will a 160/70 fit? Or something even taller? Will that screw up the handling?

Well, the 160/60 fits, so width shouldn't be an issue. You just need to figure out how much clearnace you have with the inner fender under full suspension compression so you can be sure the extra height won't rub.
Have you calculated how much of a gearing change you'll get out of en extra 7mm in height?

Going by the figures on Avon's web site for their ST46 tires, it would be about a 2% difference. I have already switched to a 16 tooth front sprocket but I would like the gearing to be a little bit taller. I bought a 46 tooth rear sprocket recently. I put it on for a test but didn't leave it. I liked the gearing there but I ran out of room on the the adjusters so I will have to replace the chain to run that sprocket. I am not sure I like the smaller sprocket moving the chain closer to the swingarm. It looks like ithe chain would be more apt to hit the swingarm or the plastic guide on it more often on bumpy roads or under heavy breaking.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the 46T sprocket... B12's come with a 45T sprocket and have a bigger swingarm.
