Instrument Lights
« on: May 15, 2007, 01:20:24 PM »
My speedo and gas gauge lights are both shorting.  I can pull the socket out of the back of the intrument and wiggle the bulb in the socket and get it to come on.  But then when I ride the bike and hit a bump they will go out, sometimes one, sometimes both.  Then later when I hit another bump, or thump the intrument with my knuckle, they will come back on.  I have not been able to find a light socket small enough to replace the stock ones with, about 3/8".  I am considering changing to LEDs. but they would have to be wide angle LEDs to light up the whole intrument and I hear they require resisitors.

Any other ideas to solve the problem, or help with the LED idea?

SLIGHTLY crimp the socket so it'll hold the light better and/or put a dab of solder between the bulb base & socket. (Not too much, you don't want it to run down and short the bulb.) If you do the latter, you might wanna go ahead and put fresh bulbs in so you won't have to desolder them to change them so soon.
