How Or Why do some get much better miles from tires??
« on: August 26, 2005, 01:50:59 PM »
Hello fellow B12 owners, or any BBS members. Many that sound like much more aggressive riders than I, get 6,7,k and more out of a rear tire?? Is it Weight, take off from stops, type road? The most i got was  from a Mac 100X but it starts with 9/32 where most all other is 7/32. Is rear wheel out of line! Just wondering? i am over 200lbs what is the norm. You twisty riders must ride on the sides!! I got virgin chicken strips you can use. Flat, straight, cop infested! C-FL. :beers:

Type of tire compound (hard or soft). Type of riding style (sane or brake when you see God). Road surface (rough or smooth). Temperature (hot or cold). All of these lead to the amount of miles you can get out of a set of tires. I myself buy soft sticky tires and ride it like I stole it. I buy a lot of tires because I love the smell of burning rubber !!!!!!!!

I've been thinking about this too.  My odometer just rolled over 4k, and I'm not sure my rear tire (Mac 100) is going to pass inspection next month.  I have a friend with a B12 who I would say has a similar riding style when we ride together, but his tire does not seem to be wearing nearly as fast as mine.  I think its a couple things.  He does more highway riding than I do, and I've got a good 50-60 lbs on him.  I also think I have a heavy right foot when I brake ( A bad habit I learned on my previos ride that had crappy drum brakes on the back).

I kind of look at this the same way I look at gas milage.  Yeah it's kind of interesting and I wish it was better, but unless I'm doing something wrong-no way am I going to let this be a factor in the way I ride.  I didn't buy the bike to save money, I bought it cuz it's the most fun my wife will let me have without a chaperone

You can add to that list Tyre Pressure - even 1 or 2 psi can over the a period of time can make all the difference.

Also keep in mind a person that puts 500 miles on there bike in one day is harder on the tire than a rider who puts 500 miles on there tire in a week . This is due to the sustained temp of the tire , short  trips (under 50 miles )  the tire doesnt get to soft , flip side: long trips the tire gets soft and it starts to wear faster . Add a hot summer day to the equation and you'll see how I've had a pilot road last 5500 miles from commuting , and the same tire last 2500 miles from 4- 600 + mile days .
