OK-

I have a 2001 , 1200 cc bandit.
I bought it used.
It runs great, and has a D&D pipe on it.

USING 87 octain gas :
I notice when you let off the throttle and the engine winds down at times I get a gurgle in the pipes.  (No backfire) but you can hear a little gurgle.

Now - USING the 93 OCTAIN gas:
I tried this for one tank and am currently on it , still.
I notice when I let off and slow down the same exact way - I have a lot less gurgle sound.

(I am asking) ----

Is it ok to run 91 to 93 octain gas in the bike ?
IT seems to run a little smoother on the 93...

A guy at work today told me I need to stay with 87 octain......

What do you think....????????

Do a quick search and you will find lots of opinions on Octane...

Either will do just fine...and neither will cause any problems...I tend to use 87...Many PREMIUM grades from Major Refiners have additional detergents.

years ago before fuel injection and electronic ignition when mechanical and vacuum advance distributes were used in the 70's to advance and retard timing relative to load and engine speed, cars and motorcycles were much more Susceptible to pre-ignition especially with low octane fuel. The reason was that because low octane has much less tolerance under pressure and heat (unstable) and is more likely to pre-ignite before the piston would reach TDC on its way up causing tiny dents on top of the piston making the piston ring like a bell, hence the term ping. Higher octane fuels are more tolerant of pressure and heat (more stable) due to additives to make it that way and therefore much more likely to detonate at the precise timing and spark ignition, hence run smother. There are allot of folks born in the late 80's & 90's that tell me I'm full of schnitzel but they line up to say that about allot of stuff they have no experience in. I know cause I was there to deal with regular gas either by manually retarding the timing to burn regular gas (less power) or run mid grade or premium. Now EI & EFI engines do this automatically but EFI does a better job at compensating like the B1250, however what you notice in lack of smoothness and maybe a bit less power using regular gas is not your imagination. In high compression engines 13:1 where heat and pressure is enormous like in my CRF450X, you either run premium gas or crack a piston, its that simple. However most production street legal vehicles have a compression ration of between 8:1 and 10:1 and can get by on regular or mid-grade gasoline without the use of premium, albeit not quite as smooth as premium which is what I use in all my bikes.

Whatever the manufacturer suggests is what I use on a regular basis.  I have used both and don't notice any real difference.  A friend of mine with a GSXR has to use 91 or he runs into problems.

A friend of mine with a GSXR has to use 91 or he runs into problems.

Don't forget the GSXR1000 has a 12.5/1 compression ratio, while the Bandit's is only 9.5/1.  Huge difference in octane requirement just on that basis.

My old CB750F had an 11/1 ratio IIRC... and needed premium as well.

I personally use 87 without a hiccup in my '03 B1200.

We use (R+M)/2. (R=Research method, M=Motor method). Europe only uses Motor method, IIRC.

Here in NZ,  91 is great in a stock Bandit .
I believe the guys in the States use 87 ?   which is probably the same as our 91 ? 

Modified form I use 95 or 98..   Gaz.

Not being up on what octane is what I can't tell what octane I use  :lol: but given that I'm a cheap skate I usually fill up on normal unleaded (the cheapest).  I've found that if I use the expensive stuff, premium unleaded, it just empties my wallet quicker for no noticable difference to bike performance. Oh and for the record, my 02B12 is stock standard.

Use whatever the manufacturer recommends.
Using a higher octane than recommended can actually cause Carbon buildup in your engine because of the different burn rate of the fuel.


You're also just making the oil companies richer.

I use 87 in my 2002 almost exclusively. My only concern is the amount of alcohol most companies add to regular gas. Shell is the only company that provides the information directly on their pumps and it says up to 10% alcohol in regular, 5% in middle grade and no alcohol in premium.

I usually fill my tank with Shell premium before I store it for winter to avoid the potential mess associated with alcohol content. Other than that it's 87 all the way as I don't see any difference in how my engine behaves.
