Title: Painting the windshield???
Post by: bngboyd on May 13, 2008, 03:15:17 PM
I was thinking of painting my OEM windshield all black.

Has anyone done this?

Do you think Krylon spray paint would work?

I guess if it turns out like crap I could just replace it with an aftermarket one.

What say you?

There's another 1250 owner (rworm?) that did just that recently - posted it over at Two Wheeled Texans in the Suzuki Bandit section of the forum.  Looks pretty good in some cases but his bike is all black as well.  I haven't done it myself but here are some suggestions.

Krylon should work just fine - shoot the inside only and prep the surface with a little sanding - wet sand with 220 or 320 and spray away.  In spite of the dry times listed on the can I'd give it a week to fully cure.  Avoid spray lacquer due to it's ability to eat plastic and it's total inability to ward off UV rays.

I recommend you buy the after market dark tint screen. I picked up mine from eBay fairly cheap and it only took a few minutes to install. See eBay item number 140232638852.

That black screen did come out nice, but what I really liked about rworm's bike was the blacked motor!  :thumb:
Wish Hammamatsu would do this.  It looks SOOO much better than the all silver lump.  The silver covers really set off the rest of the black motor.

For those of you too lazy to click on the windscreen link, here's what I'm talkin' about:

Yeah, he has a lot of work into his bike and it sure does show. I also like the polished rims, black chain guard, and black rad covers. Also painted the bars and triple black. Excellent work and probably my favorite 1250 yet.

FWIW - I painted the OEM screen on my CBR, pretty much the way Jay described.  (After dumping the bike off the trailer and shattering my BRAND NEW ZG DB).  It turned out pretty decent.  Good luck!

Ok, I did it. Turned out real nice and was a piece of cake. Did not even mask the front at all. Just removed from bike and sprayed it on the inside.

 :thanks:  :beers:
