Title: Pressure Indicator Valve Caps
Post by: suzbnd12 on December 30, 2005, 12:56:27 PM
Does anybody have any experience with the valve caps that show you if the air pressure in your tires is low?

Looks like a good idea instead of reaching for a tire guage each ride but I wonder how far down do your tires have to be before the caps indicate that you are low on pressure.

Unless there's a new line on the market, I've not read any glowing reports on the ones that are green for go and change color when they get too low. The biggest problem being there has to be too big of a drop to trip them.

You're money would be better spent on a good, accurate tire gauge and using it.

What do you think is a "good, accurate tire gauge" ? You see so many out there, how can you know whats good? I'm in the market for a new one and haven't seen one yet that look all that good! I want one to carry with me that I can trust.

Funny you should ask that...

Motorcycle Consumer News recently did a shootout on tire gauges. I'll have to dig it up and post the results. One thing I remember about the article was you don't always get what you paid for in this case. Some of the cheapies did very well and some of the big buck jobs sucked.

Just about any tyre guage is going to be more accurate than the average serice station piece of crap.....that is unless you blokes in the 'states and UK are blessed with service stations that actually have decent accurate guages...

You're lucky these days if they've got air at all, let alone one that actually has a gauge on it.

And those compressors are about as fast as one of those $9 cigarette lighter socker specials from WalMart.

(Speaking of which, make great travel compressors if you strip them from their case and replace the plug with a couple of alligator clips.)

Back to the Valve caps, for some peoples they would be a bloody good idea. ie Donna the other half. Quote my bikes handling all wrong there is something wrong with it. " Oh dear when was the last time you checked the tyre presures. I dont do that stuff thats your JOB. And I know she aint the only one. 9 in 10 customers that came thru the shop, where at least 8 to 10psi shy some as much as 20psi. , and the best part is they claim they didnt notice. :duh:  One bloke came in to have the front end freshened up, springs oil bearings etc. front tyre was down to 10psi, pumped it back up to 38psi told him to go away. The bike was fine after that.
Me well I'm anal about tyre presures, before the bike moves out of the shed, tyre presures are checked, and I mean every time. I even bought one of them small 2 hp compressors just for the job.

I'm not quite as anal about it as you Mick, but I check the tyre pressures at least twice a week, and before a go for a decent ride.  Riding every day, particularly on our shyte roads, it's pretty easy to tell if the pressures are lower than normal.
