Well here it is folks! As many of you know I lost the motor in my 12R last season and my Bandit was having issues. I thought alot about it and decided that the Bandit would better suit my occasional track habit as well as hooligan antics while still being comfortable to commute on. I think Bandits are as overlooked as FZ1s and whatnot. So I am lucky to own the ONE model year that had bad pistons from the factory. I planned to replace the pistons this winter and that snowballed into something much more extreme. I have taken lots of pics to share with those who are interested. Here we go :mfclap:
Here are a few pics of the bike as she was when she broke

For all who arent aware, the reason the fairings are missing from the nose and it looks ratbike-ish is because it was knocked down and run over in seattle by a hit and run asshole :rant When i put it back together i custom fit the whole front end of an '02 Hayabua on :mfclap: the Busa bar risers and cables didnt fit well with all the vanity panels so they had to go.
Here are some pics of the teardown

The old exhaust. I have a good friend with an '02 Bandit12 and holeshot jet kit. He had a baby and couldnt afford to get this pipe. So i surprised him and gave this one to him. Little dent but works great! :mfclap: :mfclap:

Thanks for lookin'! :ninja: :ninja:

Great shots...
How many miles on this engine? You said this was an engine that had the bad pistions. It looks like there is quite a bit of oil and deposit on the tops of the pistons and combustion chambers, so it shows.
Hope the project goes well.

Odo was at 19k-ish when we took it apart. I bought it salvage with 6700 on it. Was way outa tune. Got her running beautiful, but in the last 5k or so I started getting TONS of blowby outa the crankcase vent and oil out the exhaust when revved quick. :duh: It'll basically be a crate motor when im done though. All new seals/bearings ect

If people are interested i'll post more as more happens.
Interested! Give us everything! :)

+1 ! :bigok:
Is that a RD350 motor I see in the background of some of those shots?
What's up with that? Another project?
-
no thats a Duc motor. Pics were taken in my mechanic's shop. He has 4 motors in there for major rebuilds at the moment. But he says mine's the most fun because mine definitely isnt going back together stock
-
Weird... I've never seen a Duc motor that was a two-stroke parallel twin -
Especially with the word "YAMAHA" on the wet clutch cover. :stickpoke:

:duh: haha i wasnt sure which pic you were reffering to hahaha. its gonna be one of those days...
-
It's the only other motor that appears in several frames that I could see enough of to hazard a guess.
Helps that I used to have one of those wheelie machines.

I see just a glimps of some air colled motor in the background of one other pic, but I couldn't see enough of it to guess.

Hey Red01. Who's pipes did you have on that RD. They look kinda like DG's. Certainly not stock. I thought the RD's (like my old Kaw 500 triple) were really misquito foggers :beers:
-
Good eye! Yup, dem's DG chambers. :bigok:
More than just the pipes that weren't stock.
(I had a sticker on my helmet that said "Member: Honda for lunch bunch")
I was torn between the RD and a Kawi triple...
Went with the Yammie because it handled better and no center cylinder to cook.
-
No question the early Kaw 500 triples were poor handlers. It is the ONLY bike I ever owned that felt like it had a hinge in the middle. You could feel the frame/swingarm junction flex when you pushed it a bit in a fast corner. Also used to drag the pipe on the right side easily. It was fast in it's day though...
Mine had a double leading shoe drum front brake. If I took it all apart on Sunday, deglazed shoes and drum, greased all pivots, centered shoes, etc. it would be a two finger stopper for Monday, three fingers Tuesday, four on Wed and Thursday on, as hard as you could pull for little effect.
I always expected I would sell it and get an RD350/400.

Nice project, really like the front end.
That beautiful white trellis frame behind the Yammie RD motor screams Ducati, possibly 1991 or '92 900SS?
-
yea its a 900. getting a complete rebuild with big bore too i think. gonna go tear the rest of my motor apart today so ill have some more pics soon.
:beers:

The motor is completely apart, i just havent had time to upload all the pics. I had a lull in financing so progress slowed a bit. The body is off for work/paint. Im hoping that NEXT weekend ill custom mount my damper and then get everything off to ceramic/powdercoat. Ill get those pics up asap :beers:

Sounds good.
Looking forward to reading about your progress.

Yea its at that lull stage where im doing more odering of parts than working on the bike. once its all the way apart and gets colored up then a ton of work will start again to reassemble. I'll just show all the engine mods i bought when i post the pics. I get the block back next week and i just recieved my head back from Holeshot. They 'massaged' it a bit for me

You used an entire Busa front end...trees and all? How does that affect the geometry of the bike (ie: height) vs. stock?
Tipsy

yup everything. geometry is 1' lower in the front. have the fork tubes moved to where they are flush with the top clamp. thats one reason why im mounting a damper. Its steering is a hair quicker but im worried about excessive shake with all the new power it'll have. Other than that its awesome. Busa brakes stop the bike with ease, and im adding new pads and SS brake lines. My bike was knocked down and the front tire was run over by a hit-and-run asshole in downtown seattle. Twisted the bandit forks all up. couldnt find a used set of forks on ebay or nuthin. then i found the complete front of a busa for 500 bucks, so i went for it. I want my streetfighter to be comfy too though, so i recently got rid of the busa top plate with bar risers and mounted an LSL conversion kit to add clamps.handlebars. loots nice!

just found this thread...any updates?
-
Not yet. Frame and whatnot are all off at powdercoat. As soon as i get it back i can start reassembly. But unfortunately theres a bit of a backup at the powdercoaters atm, so hopefully ill get my stuff back in a week or so
Ill be sure to post updates as soon as i have 'em
