Title: Rear fender trim
Post by: BBurton on March 06, 2005, 09:30:49 PM
I just trimmed 4 inches off of my 03 B12 rear fender. Looks pretty good, it is now almost flush with the bottom of my license plate. It is amazing how much better the rear looks now.   I used a Stanley mini hand saw with a fine tooth blade and then did the final clean up work with a 180 grade sandpaper block. I will probably eventually trim it all off and get Holeshot cat eye blinkers for front and rear. I wish that Holeshot had the clear lenses option however...

can you post a picture? I've thought of doing that myself but the thought of hacking at it and screwing up my fender kept me from it. If I could see it then I'd know if I should attempt it. Did you remove it or cut it on the bike :?:

I didn't take any pics of the process, the 2001 and up Bandits are very easy to trim instead of buying a costly fender eliminator kit. If you go to Holeshot.com and go to the Bandit section you can find a pretty easy step by step process to help you eliminate the fender. I just figured what the heck and just drew a line with a colored pencil until I liked what I saw and then I started cutting away. I didn't take the fender assembly off the bike. I think that I will take some pics and see if anyone likes how it looks. Just take your time, measure twice and cut once!! A friend of mine stopped over and thought that the fender came that way. Remember that most all screw ups can be fixed!!

Dale's instructions (http://www.holeshot.com/old/Bandit/bndt_fendr_elim2.html) trim more off than that.

Here's the results of my following Dale's instructions. I fabbed my own "L" brackets to mount the signals to the plate.

One big plus is that fender plastic is EASY to work with!

Just plan your cuts, and  cut a little LESS than you intend.

The plastic is then easily squared off or shaped with a sanding block.

I ended up doing mine about 3 times, over a couple of years....getting progessively shorter each time.

I just can't trim that much off until I either buy the brackets or make a set. SO I was trying to figure out if it would look better to trim it as short as I can using the original plastic for the signals or leave it till I can get new brackets. I don't want it to look like a total hack job in the mean time.... I dont like the massive air brake that hangs there now but cobbled up crap isn't a whole lot better.

I've found that a cutting wheel and a sanding drum on a Dremel do a nice job on the plastic.  Plus, you get to feel like Paulie from OCC!

On my B4, i trimmed the fender totally flush with the bodywork, used flush-mount signals and a plate bracket from JC Whitney.

You need to get a World Wide Bandit Owner's Assoc. Plate frame from Holeshot.  They are really nice, and made of metal.

Definately get the pictures, I too was considering doing this. I also thought that f i did do it, I would finish off the edge with auto trim rubber/plastic tubing. most come with a glue already inside, all you do is push it on.

Thought about it, but thought the price was a bit steep.

I've got a different frame on it than what's in those pics now... The one on it now says "Cheap Floozy" - goes well with some friends frames who have "Taunting Harlot," "Lil Tart" - and the now MIA "Screaming Hussy"

Another way to do it is to replace the black undertray with a sweet looking color matched one that eliminates the long mud guard, gives a place to mount the plate, and comes with different rear signals. There's several differrent styles out there.

This one's from Roca:

...and there are others, too

Trimmed mine to a nub, and it looks great.  Almost like the license plate is just floating  under the seat.  At work now, but will post a few pics tonight from home.  I really like the appearance overall, plus it really helps the hugger be more noticable (sp?).  Anyway

I also removed the turn indicators, and cut holes in the rear plastic on each side and replaced the indicators there.  From Lockhart-phillips.

I guess this is pointless to explain without pics.

I'm going to get round to trimming/replacing my rear end sometime on my 96 B12.  Although I do have a Ventura rack fitted - it has been custom mounted so it doesn't push the indicators out - so I'll have to figure out what to do whith that.  Either trim around it or see if I can mount one of them custom undertrays with the rack in place.
Anybody had experience with the Ventura rack and customising the rear end?

I've not trimmed my rear fender and I'm going to tell you why....

I do alot of group riding with my friends and you would be surprised how many small rocks/stones are kicked up by a rear tire on a bike.  Out of respect for their machines and the potential damage that I might cause to their bikes, I have resisted the temptation to cut my fender off....  I know it looks good but I decided to use the fender to display a big fat reflective sticker instead....

I could care less about the cages, however....

Rocks kicking up can be cured by a tire hugger, I think they look pretty good too!! Any trimming that you may do on the B12 rear will be an improvement in appearence, I still have enough left to keep water off my back and help deflect rocks.

It might help but it won't "cure" it.  They sit too far back on the wheel.  About the only thing a hugger does is keep your shock clean.  They do look good however (I have one).

I wanted a cleaner look on my 03 bandit 1200 on the rear.  I trimmed almost all of the plastic away, except enough to remount my license plate. I bought the clear alternatives tail light and tried wiring in a trailer converter to combine my tail light and turn signals and ran into problems on long rides(got hot and gave my problems). So I got rid of the trailer converter and bought LED lights from Walmart and changed out the red bulbs. For turn signals, I took apart one of my short stalks and used the inner parts. On each side of my license plate light, I drilled a hole on each side and inserted my turn signal lights. I also drilled a hole in the plastic next to it to give more brightness to the side. After putting it back together, it looks and works great!  I have pics if anybody wants to see what it looks like. Just send me an email. BTW, is there a place I can post pics?

here is what I recently posted on another board:

Hey all-
I've been staring way too long at the ugly fender (no offense to any fender lovers) and I finally got the nerve up to introduce Mr. Dremel to it.
First, I traced the original fender's bottom curve on to a piece of paper. Then I traced it so it came out so the bottom of the curve was just below the license plate. I had to free hand the contour to the sides, ending up just below the inside bracket for the signal lights.
I used the Dremel's cutting wheel to make the cut. After a few attempts, I realized that it was better to do a series of little cuts with a sawing motion. Then I used the little barrel sander to buff it out...one important tip, use the low setting for this or you'll make it uneven. Then I used some blue plumber's grit paper to fine tune it. i was a little careless and marked up more than the edge, but it may blend in with a good washing.
I originally thought I was going to put some car door edging on it, but it came out better than I expected so I'm leaving it alone.
Here are the pictures:

I started out by trimming mine down too the plate but after my buddy put a fender eliminator kit on his ZRX it was time for mine to go. I checked out this thread and decided to take a few pictures of my shot at fender elimaniton!

After about a six-pack and a few cigars these were my results!

I used a right angle grinder with a thin cut off wheel to do the initial trim leaving about a 1/4" of material off the mark and then swapped out the cut off wheel for a 80 grit sanding disk to bring it down to the line. I pulled a blade out of my utility knife to do the final shape and the hand sanded the rest of the way.

I made up a couple of L brackets out of some flat stock and riveted them to my license plate bracket and bolted on a set mini turn signals that I picked up at Cycle Gear!

Just remember go slow and it should look OK!

Title: finally did some trimming

I finally hacked off some of the fender. Left the stock signals in place and just shortened and neatened things up. I'm pretty happy with it. I may do the Holeshot thing eventually but this is good for now. Gonna try to post a before and after. Pics are with a camera phone so they aren't the best but you get the idea.

Just read the FAQ and don't have a way to post pics. Help anyone?

I did that Holeshot fender mod to my B12 about a year ago. I was cleaning the bike the other day and discovered that the small portion of the fender that remained to mount the license and turn signals had broken almost off the bike.

I'll be moving to a undertail kit of some sort as soon as I find one I'm willing to pay for. Heads up on hacking!

I picked up a set of Dinkywinkaz indicator lights at Cycle Gear for $16 and made up my own L brackets to mount them to the stock license plate bracket I think I spent more money on beer and smokes than I did on parts for that job!
