Taller windshield for 2003 1200S
« on: June 19, 2007, 10:32:36 PM »
I have a 2003 Suzuki Bandit 1200S / GSF1200S.  I have the three windshields listed below.

Givi model # D252S: GSF1200S Bandit (00-04)

Zero Gravity Sport Touring Windscreens model # 23-171-02 BANDIT 1200s/GSF (01-05)

Gustafsson Plastics, Inc.  Suzuki Bandit 600-1200 `00-`05 24"

I didn't like to stock windshield on my bike because of the very bad airflow.  I installed the Givi and it works better but not enough.  That is what is on the bike now.  I tried to find out if the Zero Gravity was bigger than the Givi, but the only way I could tell for sure was to buy one.  So I did, but it is still in the plastic bag it came in because the shape and size are so similar to the Givi, I thought it would be a waste to swap them just to find out they offered the same wind protection.

In my quest to find a better windshield, I came across the bikescreen.com website for Gustafsson Plastics.  They have a longer more extended windshield but the shape isn't any different.  I am afraid to install this one because the air might just hit my face that much harder.  It is also still in the plastic bag it came in.

Then I heard about Laminar Lip products and I became very excited.  I looked at the http://www.laminarlip.com/bandit.php page and see two possibilities.  I just don't' know what the best combination would be and hope you can help recommend something.  I have never written to ask such a question and hope you don't mind helping me.

Thanks!

I'm afraid the only real way is for you to try the different ones. Windscreens are quite personally subjective and results are impacted by your size & shape, how you sit on the bike, how your bike is set up suspension wise and even what kind of helmet you wear.

Personally, I've tried the ZG ST that you have and found it to give me excellent wind protection, but the wind noise was so loud I couldn't live with it (and I always wear earplugs anyway). Plenty of folks are happy with this screen though - it just doesn't work for me. I traded it in for ZG's Double Bubble and found the DB to give better airflow than the stocker (but not as nice as the ST). The wind noise was less than the stocker, so I stuck with it. IMHO, the Givi screen is more comparable to the DB than it is to the ST, so you might want to try it and see if it works out for you.

I installed the Laminar Touring lip, and it is friggin' wicked.  And it comes off in 2secs if you want to rip around.  I am 5'11" and I am running it with the Genmar Risers and it is still great, with or without the risers.

I conducted a test this evening.  With the help of our fellow BanditAlleyBBS friends, I got the instructions for swaping windscreens.  I want to say I appreciate everyones helpfulness.  I was able to take off the current Givi, put on the Zero Gravity, take off the Zero Gravity, put on the Gustafsson, take off the Gustafsson, and put the Givi back on all within 90 minutes. I took the bike for a ride in between each swap to check the wind effects. Turns out the best of all is the Givi. I am a pro now at switching windshileds.

I found the Zero Gravity to produce significant wind noise and a little more turbulance then I prefer.  The Gustafsson is way longer and was weird to look at.  It was better than the Zero Gravity, but not as good as the Givi was.  Therefore, I am sticking with the Givi.

I am however going to try the Laminar Lip.  I will check out both the touring model and the standard model.  I have tried so many things, might as go for them all.

I also have Genmar barback risers and really feel they help.

You might as well.  Gee you could write a book and sell it by the time you are done.   Good stuff to know though.

I had a Rifle Windshield on my '98 1200.  It was a stovepipe affair and looked funny...but it worked.  Kept the wind and bugs off of me.  Rifle does not make one for the 1250...I will keep looking....Givi has one that looks like it should work.  Don't know how much trouble putting it on...
