rear shock settings
« on: May 11, 2006, 08:17:40 PM »
ok just got my busa rear in the mail today. 9 dollars plus shipping, can't beat that. any how i see three adjustments on this shock, one next to the resevour, one at the bottom and one at the top of the spring, I weigh 300 pounds and ocasionally ride two up, so I want to make this shock as stiff as possible, so I asume I wind the spring all the way down and turn the flat head brass screws all the way in? now on the screw next to the resevour there is what appears to be a large plug with flat sides is that like a lock nutt kinda joby for that setting or can I leave that alone. ps I do like stiff shock so i want full pre-load, dampening and rebound.
 Thanks

It's NOT softer than the stocker. IIRC, the Busa spring is ~2x the weight rating of the B12 shock.

You should set the spring preload to give you 1" of sag when you sit on it.

I'm ~240 lbs and have my compression & rebound settings at the mid point (like 9 or 10 clicks). It seems to still work well when my wife is on board, too, but then I ride less agressively when she's on board - and I'm too lazy to fiddle with the shock for the small bit of riding I do 2-up.

Red 01 has good advice. Just set the pre-load to give you 1" of sag when you sit on the bike.

Hate to tell you this, but there's no such word as "dampening", at least not in my Unabridged Webster's. You should say "compression", not "dampening" (i doubt that you want to put water in your shocks).

I hate to hear the morons on TV say "dampening" when they mean "damp down". Some idjits are even referring to shock absorbers as "dampeners". This prolly comes from the Brit term for them, "Dampers". Sorry to preach at ya, but this has become a sore point for me. Enough is enough! Interpersonal communications already suck without also corrupting the definitions of words or making up/repeating meaningless 'new' words.
