Title: New Leafs Coach is a Biker!!
Post by: jbrough7 on May 13, 2006, 07:50:20 AM
39 year old Paul Maurice looks to be THE guy to lead us to the promised land.  Just read where he loves his motorcycle but then it never mentions what it is...my money says it's a Harley!  The guy makes several hundred thousand dollars a year and I just can't seem him buzzing around on a sportbike.

Anybody heard anything?
Any members from the Soo?

The best part is he is a coach! Something lacking in the last 7 yrs in Toronto.

I grew up in the Soo. His father was my teacher in grade 8 at St Francis.
I met Paul when he was just a little guy when his father brought him to the school.
If I recall an article I read, he believe he said something about riding sport bikes.

Lots of time to ride in the spring like the Red Wings coaches have had the last three years.

With these new cap rules, any team can be a contender. Yes, even Toronto, weird eh!

This is kinda on topic and I just gotta tell it:

I was driving around Boston looking for Fenway Park on a summer trip.  Got on to Beacon Ave. so I knew I was close but I love to gab so I just kept stopping the SUV and asking people where Fenway was.  Three people in a row said, "Sorry, we're tourists too!" Next guy I stop to ask looks a little familiar...I think right away -"This guy plays for the Detroit Red Wings!"  He tells me he doesn't know where Fenway is, either, as he is a tourist and he points at his plates -"Michigan!"  That sealed it!  I said, "Are you Brendan Shanahan?  Can we shake your hand?"

He looks a bit shy but says he IS Shanahan and says no problem so my Dad and I double park on Beacon Ave. and yak with Brendan for 10 minutes or so.  It was great!  He is just a super nice guy.  He was born and raised in Toronto so I kept asking why he didn't sign up with the Leafs instead of the Rangers and he told me they never called once.

He was really concerned about us finding Fenway and offered lots of suggestions.  We shook hands and said our goodbyes and I never thought of the camera sitting right there between the front seats....or even an autograph!  He drove off in a beautiful black Range Rover SUV.

It was the highlight of the trip for my Dad to meet a real Canadian hockey hero.  He couldn't stop grinning and talking about it for weeks afterwards.

One thing that surprised me was Brendan didn't look really huge and muscular.  He was a bit shorter than me (at 6'3") and maybe just a tad stockier.  He looked almost slender without all the pads.  But it's so nice to see a pro athlete without all the attitude and ego.  Wish the Leafs woulda plunked up the $4 mil and got him!

Yeah, the players I've met (no one of that high profile) have seemed like regular guys, no prima donnas.

Just to one up ya on the ballpark story:  this week I attended a Raptors/Chukars baseball game at Lindquist Field in Ogden UT.  Top that!

I've been trying to top it for two days now and this is all I can come up with:

I lived in an isolated village and coached a really good womens' volleyball team.  We advertised that a select team of professional women volleyball players were coming for an exhibition series.  They were called the California Cuties.  Lots of people paid $5 to see the games.  Course, me and a bunch of weirdo guys dressed in drag and played.  It was a lot of fun.  I'll never forget the way that silk bra felt...........

One of my dearly departed stepfather's frequent quotes.

But a fella could chip a tooth!

My condolences.

Weird you should mention that as my father-in-law is slipping away even as we speak (write?)...I swear that nothing underscores our own mortality  quite like losing a parent or parent-in-law. (except maybe wiping out on pavement!)

While he was the first of my parents to go, I think there's an overall sort of path to understanding that people *do* die and one day you *will* be one of them.  For me, the first shocker was when Jon Erik Hexum accidentally blew his brains out.  For a guy a couple years older in school than me, it was when Karl Wallendas died.  For a lot of young people, it will be Steve Irwin's death.  For a whole generation of high school students, it was the World Trade Center.  (They also learned the lesson that *some people are really mean*.

Five years ago, I had my first experience with a close friend's death (breast cancer that was not recognized in time) and then a couple years later, another friend (and also my supervisor), and now my stepfather this year.

Just as disturbing has been seeing my mother's thinking being a little fuzzy and illogical at times.  While I got used to my stepfather's similar problems, he had strokes, but with my Mom, it's just that she just isn't quite as sharp as she used to be.  Not that she's senile, but I see a change in her accuity.  Fortunately, that never ha--oh look!  A cute bunny!

Uh, what were you saying?

You ARE funny, and I just don't mean your LOOKS!!

The old guy slipped away today.  Weird thing is in our 25 year relationship we had only two things in common: his daughter and BIKES!  I think I've told you he used to ride and race when he was a young buck in England.  We could always talk about biking and his face lit up right up to the end when he would heard me revving up my little Bandit.

Think how happy he would have been if I had got a 1200!!

I sincerely hope it was a peaceful passing.  Remember the good times you have and the ways he enriched your life.  All we leave behind are the works we gave the world and the memories we created in others.
