Title: Help! (Freakin' Automatic Updates!)
Post by: PitterB4 on August 14, 2006, 10:08:19 PM
So, I just got a pretty kickin' new laptop.  I've got it all set up the way I want.  I do NOT want Windows automatic updates turned on.  How the FFFFFFFFFFFFF do I get the GD little bubble to stop telling me the I don't have auto updates turned on!!!!!!!  I know it's not turned on...  I TURNED IT OFF!!!  It's driving me nuts.  I'm about to throw $1k against the wall.  My desktop which is also XP (Home instead of Media Center) and doesn't do it.  Please help me save my sanity! Make the sadistic little bubbles go away!  Please?????

Download "XPAntispy"
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/XPAntiSpy/1020440577/1

It'll let you disable a bunch of that crap, without having to go into the registry.

Then, also, to stop getting the message about disabled anything as it pertains to the security center, go to the control panel, then to the "Security center".  On the left side, there should be something that says "Change the way Security Centre alerts me", disable at will.

Out of curiousity though, why do you want to stop getting fixes for sh!t that Microsoft should have done right the first time but didn't?

I want to turn it off b/c they've screwed up so many of the 'fixes'.  I do update regularly but manually.  I figure that way there's at least a chance to not download the screwup I hear about on the news that morning.

Thanks, folks!   :bigok:

Wow,.. They announce that sort of stuff on the news down there?  Here it's something I get to find out all by my lonesome.  Of course I've never had a machine totally borked by a windows update.  (probably helps that I spend more time in linux on my primary machine.   )

Actually, Maniac from this board had his system totally hosed but Auto Updates.  I think it was that same day that the news had stories about a bum update.  I don't trust MS and don't want them doing anything automatically to my fancy new laptop.  I'll also throw the GD thing through the wall if it doesn't stop telling me that my "computer may be at risk".  F-off!

Thanks again.

The security Centre is usually responsible for the your puter may be at risk messages.... That should be fixable with the instructions I posted, no?    "Change the way security center alerts me" in the control panel/Security Center applet will allow you to stop SC from alerting you about  Antivirus, firwall and updates status...

Oh sorry - I didn't mean to say it didn't work.  I honestly been too effin' busy to mess with it this week.  New job, busted up bike, kids going back to school.  I'm sure it'll work.  I was just bitchin' about MS.   :stfu:

Yeah - I'm a dipshit.  All that flashy stuff on the right side distracted me... I didn't see the important stuff on the left.  :blah:  :stfu:  :bs:

Storm - one could reasonably guess that a page with a bunch of flash and glamour on one side and substance on the other was designed by a woman.  :monkeymoon:

Oh Pffft!   What are we?  MiniWheats?  Have you ever seen a guy in a motorcycle shop trying on gear?  You guys are -way- worse than us!   :stickpoke:

Of course that screen is typical MS eye candy crap.  They hide what they don't want you messing with.
