Title: Anybody into tenting with their bandit?
Post by: jbrough7 on June 03, 2006, 09:52:51 PM
Have done a bit of camping with a bike long ago but am planning a fairly long ride, for the first time, this summer, with just me, the bandit and a tent.

Has anyone ever used one of those expensive army type one-man jobbies?  Not sure of the name but they are incredibly light and small when rolled up.

I was thinking I would just get a small $40 jobbie from WalMart but not too sure.  My present tent is 4 man so way too big.

I'm taking along one of those blow up mattresses to sleep on.

Will change the oil and the plugs before I go.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Oh God, I was afraid we were gonna find out that you REALLY like your Bandit.  Really really like it.

Hey, although I took two saddlebags, a tankbag, and a tail bag just for a week in Atlanta at someone's house, the idea of carrying a tent and air mattress sounds like a LOT of stuff.  Plus it still doens't give you a hot shower and cold toilet (or the reverse).  I'm into the motel scene, in other words.

You like those ones with the heart shaped bed and mirrors, I bet!

Who needs a motel bed with  magic fingers when you've got b@ll-buzzing action at 4000 RMS?

Short answer; no I haven't combined a tent experience with riding my bandit.  Only time I've spent in tent's they were provided courtesy of the Department of National Defense.

As a child my family wasn't into camping; and surprise! now that I'm an adult my wife and daughter are not into camping; they're city girls.

However; I joined Mountain Equipment Co-op in Toronto.  You may want to check out their website.  Members are entitled to rent anything they sell; so in the back of my mind I keep thinking that one day it I do want to carry a tent with me on my bandit I can try before I buy at MEC.  Plus; their products are picked by real outdoor enthusiasts; something you're not going to get at Walmart.

Their home page is at www.mec.ca.  Here is a page that offers tips on selecting tents.

Thanks a bunch, 1200, I'll check 'em out.

I took my kids camping so much when they were young that they start to gag now just at the thought of it!

I think they would rather play a video game about camping than actually doing it. :duh:

I agree MEC is great. If you're traveling light something like this might be good.

Do the tent and trailer come in pink?  Can you give him the part numbers?

Problem is, it would have to be reduced in size, and Jim seems to have a problem doing that.

As for the original question; I rarely get a room when traveling on my motorcycle.  It has nothing to do with money; I just enjoy the feeling of "living on the road."

My tents are of the nylon backpack variety.  I prefer the REI brand, as they are reasonably priced high quality units.

Sometimes I bring a one-man tent (http://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2006/02/14/bikepics-521991-full.jpg)

Sometimes I use a two-man

That would be cool, Eddie.  I don't guess I'll ever do it, but the idea sounds so free wheeling and fun!

I bought a WalMart special made by the folks that brought you the Swiss Army knives.  It's a 2 holer made for backpacking and comes with a single pole that doubles as a hiking pole.  I haven't actually used it yet (carried it though)...liked the looks and features.  Since I don't have my own pics you can see the product page on the WalMart site:

Over the last several years I`ve done a few cross country trips on my Bandit. I was really amazed about how many campgrounds there are! There all over the place. Plus they have showers and stuff. So much cheaper than hotels and in my opinion a whole alot more fun.  I use a Kelty 2 man tent. I find that a 1 man tent or anything else thats smaller just to damned cramped and impossible to get dressed in. Plus, it`s nice to have a good tent incase a hurricane wants to blow in on your parade.
Everything fits fine on my Bandit, especially with a Renntec rear rack.

I know, I'm trying to be more serious!

I'm going to try this with the camping idea:  Take a small, plastic tarp along.  Tie one end onto the bike front and rear and use pegs on the other to hold it in the ground.  Then sleep underneath this 'lean-to'.

musta been done before.

Try this...

Have a long and relaxing ride.  Enjoy the view, the wildlife, the wilderness.

Then stay at the Hilton.

I was cured of sleeping on the ground (without a tent) about 20 years ago while traveling in the desert southwest.  When I lifted my sleeping bag one morning, a scorpion scurried from under the area previously occupied by my bag and body's heat!

Well, you know how it is when you are better looking than anyone else, built like a tank,  ride a Suzuki Bandit, show up at a national park and start partying like there`s no tomarrow?
Man, the local wildlife just won`t leave me alone.

I've done lots of tent camping with my Bandit(99 1200).  I use a two man Coleman and a military bag.  Not much money, easy to put up in the dark--with practice.  They both go on the seat behind me.  Everything else is in saddlebags.  I do not carry food or stove or utensiles.  Eat out and save space.

Taking a small tent and sleeping bag could make the difference between a good night's sleep (safe) and a bad night's ride looking for a motel (dangerous).  Take the tent and sleeping bag even if you don't plan to use it.  You probably will and, if you do, you will be glad you brought it along.
