Post by: PeteSC on July 07, 2005, 08:48:21 AM
Good morning from Limon, Ço.
I picked up Kent yesterday morning and we boogied out here.
we have about 340 miles to go to get to Ouray....then the riding begins.
I'll stash pictures on my blog....but won't be able to put them in the colo roadtrip forum as planned until I get home.
http://www.splashblog.com/pcedel
check the unfiled picture folder for pictures i'll stash over the next week.
We did see a red silver b4oo in topeka yesterday.........

Hey! A trip to Colorado sounds fun! I even have a dual-sport.  :stickpoke: Seriously though, have a good time!

There're buiding a resort on 141? That sucks! :bomb:  That was one of my favorite roads; nice curving pavement, awesome scenery and no traffic! Well, on the bright side, at least you'll be able to get food and gas there in the future. Where are they buiding it?

The resort is almost done.  Its on the south end of gateway.Remember there was a construction sign last year?
The store and outtfitters are oprn now.   Lodge and hotel soon.
The guy who owns the Discovery channel is building it.....came from the area.
Guys....this is one gorgeous road through spectactcular scenery.   Ride it before it's too late....and packed with cell phone gabbing suv drivers heading to the resort where they'll do outdoors stuff for a couple of days then go back home to an office job and tell coworkers they experienced the  'real' colorado.....the one with massages, coffee bars,  and 200 channels of tv in the guest room.

bike is running ok.  Not worth rejetting for a week
GPS tells me I hit 11700 feet on Ophir pass.
I helped herd some sheep on a dirt road today on the dr.   I actually told them I was an aussie....and they ran back where they belonged!
uncountable dirt and gravel roads to wander.....alll with spectacular scenery.
kent says his bandit is running better here   than at home.
smoking a cigar....drinking some irish.....getting ready to fire up the grill....mule deer wander through the campsite.   Nice end to a day of riding and crashing!

How much does gas cost up there? Last year I was complaining about paying $2 a gallon up there. Now I'm doing good to pay less than $2.20 here. Most stations want more.

gas is 2.49 at the stations at ridgway.....and higher in Telluride.
Kent was happy he only paid 2.39 in Durango yesterday.
we move to gunnison for a few days today.

s'ok Pete, I'm still healing up from my crash.

Finaly went to the Doc 10 days later & found I had a broken bone in my hand....ankle wasn't broken, but sore, knee is better, but my ribs still hurt.  I'll take the splint off my hand next week, and my bike will be ready then too as soon as we get the steering stop welded on & put back together.  Got a new helmet too.

Norwood, home of the big breakfast???....I think we splt one of those last time. And you ATE THE WHOLE THING ! wheeew

John

Did it again, John....ate the giant breakfast burrito........needed it for strength!

Just got home.  Working on some pictures.

Bugs of the biting variety weren't too bad.    Lots of smashed bugs on windscreens, though....

Daytimes temps were pretty hot, and it didn't cool off as much at night as it did the last couple of trips.  (Maybe 40's max)

For a teaser, here's the top of Ophir pass, from the eastern approach.

This pass runs from US 550 between Ouray and Silverton, over the mountains to a little south of Telluride.   It's rated as an 'easy' Jeep trail, but on a bike, it's an eyeopener, at least the long downhill run to the west.
(Below)

HArd to tell here, but the road is fairly narrow, comprised of big to medium rocks, and fairly steep.   I figured out the way to get down it on a bike was to cut the ignition switch off, and coast down, using the compression of the engine to slow you.  I also realized the 1st gear on my dr650 is WAY too high!
  Got interesting......
I did see a lot of lighter dirt bikes thrashing the trails.............

Pete, Made it home around 3 pm Sat. I had a great time! Thanks for letting me tag along. I got rained on after you dropped me in Mt. Vernon. Stayed in a Comfort Inn in Casey, Ill. Saturday it rained on me for most of the ride home. That ride to Gateway and our run up 92 were my favorites.    :thanks:
