Title: Fall ride in Arkansas
Post by: gtbandit on March 12, 2005, 02:02:46 AM
I am planning on doing a ride in Arkansas in late Sept. or early Oct. I started this post on Max-Suz because there are a few 'Arkansas regulars' there that have made this ride before. There are already a few people that have expressed interest in this ride, but I don't expect it to get too big. I was thinking about planning 2 days worth of group rides, but staying at least a couple days extra. Most likely we'll be having this ride over a weekend, because it is easier for most people to get off work that way. If we get enough people, I am hoping to split up into smaller groups. Even if you don't want to do a group ride, you can still show up and do your own thing during the day and hang out with everyone in the evening. You don't have to have a Bandit to show up, just ride responsibly. Who's interested?

Thanks for the info Craig.  Let me know when it's firmed up. Hope it's not on a major football weekend.

I'll try to sneak in when no one is looking.  Hope you don't get banned for spreading the word.

We going to do Colorado again?

I just rode a Road King (Toad King) around Ouahu and Honolulu.... the ride was nice, the scooter was...well, a Harley...scraped the floorboards on the first good curve.  On the other hand, you can't drive much over 50 there, with miles at 35.

Should we join them, or do our usual ride?

Going to try to firm up some dates soon. Anybody have any preferences or restrictions?

The first weekend in October is usually always bad for me, otherwise all is clear (for now anyway).

We will not have a "Texas" Bandit Fest this fall, a least not one planned by me, so this would be a great alternative trip.  Craig is an excellent rider and knows all the good roads in AR/Southern MO.

Does anyone have any conflicting interest on Sept. 22-25? I was thinking of having the group rides on Friday and Saturday (23-24) and using Thursday and Sunday as travel days. We can also shift those dates forward or backwards a couple days if need be. Of course, you can always come earlier and/or leave later like I plan on doing.

That weekend is open for me.  However, I do have something the week before which may prevent me from attending this.  Just too much jamed into a short period of time.

There is never a good weekend for everyone so just plan and go for it!  I'll let ya know!

Major football weekend? VCRs are pretty cheap these days! Or are you referring to high school football? If so, when will you know the schedule?

Don't know, but since it's looking like I probably won't make it to the BOSS rally, I'd be game if I can get off work. I'd like to bring my Bandit this time.

Good plan. I may bring the DR650. And I will definitely have to trailer part way. What a boring ride from Atlanta to Memphis. Where are thinking of basing this rally?

I'm trying to get input from everyone coming, but I think basing out of the Harrison or Mountain Home areas would be a good location.

Well you know the area better so either place is ok with me.
It's 600 miles from Atlanta. I do know that there is outstanding fishing for big trout in the White River just southwest of Mountain Home.

that road S of Mtn Home is the one they call the Serpent?  Are there any room around there?  Fishing lodge?

OK, I dont have a tent small enuff to pack on the bandit.....
Title: Fall ride in Arkansas
Post by: gtbandit on June 03, 2005, 05:07:03 PM
There are plenty of motels in the area. Although, if we go that route, I would definately rather ride out of Harrison because it is more centrally located to most of the roads I want to hit. I have been looking for some kind of lodge or camping area with cabins that could accomadate everyone. So far, the only thing I found was Bull Shoals-White River state park. They have two 29' RVs for rent at $75 dollars a night or ready campsites with cots, ice chests, stoves and lantern for $40. I don't know if everyone will go for that, so I'm going to keep looking.

hey guys, any objections to a new to the board mid atlantic rider? I have always wented to see that area. Sept. is my last chance to get in a good ride before winterization starts. A ride in a new place with new people on the same bike sounds like a beer commercial. I`m an experienced rider and somewhat of a responsible person if that matters.

Experienced and responsible? Of course you will fit in.
All on the same model bike? Mostly. I think I'll be bringing
my DR650 rather than the Bandit.

Craig, anywhere you pick to base out of is fine. Harrison does look closer to the really good stuff. If all goes to plan, I may come out early to fish for a couple of days and then ride Friday/Saturday before making the loooong drive back to Atlanta. September is not the best time for trout on the White, but I don't think I will ask you to change the get together for November.

Cool! We'd love to have you. Arkansas ought to be a good haul for you! Hopefully, we can get a few more people from this board this come.

OK! The dates are set. I will be staying at least a couple of days longer if anybody wants to get more riding in.

I have been looking at several options for lodging/camping. After many fruitless searches, I finally stumbled across http://www.arkansas.com/. I found many cabins, lodges and hidaways that all sound interesting, but are slightly more expensive per person than renting a motel room. They usually have full kitchens, but 4 or more people would have to share a restroom. They definately do offer more in the way of ambience, outdoor atmosphere and seclusion. I've been scouring through them trying to find the more cost effective options. I have found an interesting campground with cabins with and without bathrooms and kitchenettes. Check it out! http://www.jasperandnewtoncountyresorts.com/. I wish the site had more pics and gave more info about the general layout. The one thing that I definately don't like is their reservation refund policy. It bites! If we do decide on this place, everyone would need to be good and sure they are coming before reserving!

Yes, those dates are definate!

As of right now, the 22nd and 25th are considered travel days and the 23rd and 24th are the group ride days. I plan on staying a couple of days extra (not sure which days yet) if anybody wants to stick around (or come early) for more riding time.

I'm in......can't hardly wait for it....I want cooler weather now.

It's great to see that several from the east will be there.,,,go for it 12s

Craig, anyone else from the other boards like Devilman, Cliff, the Ark crew, those Texas and Missouri guys?

all things considered I'd shoot for a motel.  I plan on riding & don't think I can carry enough camping gear on my bike for a comforabe trip.  looks liek maybe 300+ miles

regardless of what the group decides, I'll be there.  Carig, hope we can meet up with you and tex bunch on the road.

John, Cliff has posted on the thread, but hasn't said whether or not he and Collette will make it. With his job, he usually can't plan that far in advance. Devil Man hasn't posted, but Jacinda, his S/O has and she is interested.

As far as accomadations go, I'm trying to find a single location that will make everyone happy. One that has air conditioned rooms with beds and bathrooms, and  tent camping, or possibly an inexpensive lodge or cabin(s) that will hold everyone and still offer some privacy.

OK! I found this place in the town of Bull Shoals: http://www.bull-shoals-lake.com/. It is a mom and pop motel. It's inexpensive, rustic, seems to offer a down-home personal touch and offers campfire pits! For those wanting to camp, Bull Shoals-White River state park (http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/parks/park.asp?id=8 should be rather close by. What do y'all think? I'm going to send for more info. and probably call them.

Matter of fact, they do!  I just got their brochure. They also have a volley ball pit, badminton, grass golf, tetherball, a pavillion, barbeque pits, and plenty of space. Also, apparantly, they are right across the road from Bull Shoals park and a 4 minute walk to the lake.

I called Pine Lodge motel today. They offer 2 rooms with queen size beds, 2 rooms with double beds and 6 rooms with 2 queen or full size beds and a fold-out bed with kitchenettes. When I called one of the queen size bed rooms was already reserved (I believe by someone in our group). I was hoping they had more of the inexpensive rooms. If this is a problem for anyone let us know. If not, I suggest we go ahead and reserve rooms (individually) whenever we're ready as everyone seems to be happy with the location. Anybody wishing/willing to share a room please post up!

As of right now, my wife is planning on coming, so I was hoping to snag a queen bed.

I've been looking at maps and have come up with at least 3 different full day routes and will work out some shorter routes in case anybody doesn't want to or can't do a full day or if we get severe weather for part of a day.

I still need to fine tune the routes I have (look for interesting stops and good lunch places), but when I finish them I'll experiment with my map software and try to upload them to the web.

I'll probably arrive in Arkansas a little early and leave a little late in case anybody wants to extend their stay. It might be a good idea to plan in a 'rain day' just so you can increase your chances of getting at least 2 full days of good riding in. If you don't want to ride more than 2 days, you can always do the tourist thing one day.

An interesting piece of work came up and I doubt that I can get out of Atlanta until Friday 1pm. That puts me in the thick of Ozark backwoods driving at 12 midnight. Kinda unsafe after driving 10 hours pulling a trailer.
I hate to miss an opportunity to ride Arkansas during prime season.
Maybe next time around. Y'all have fun and if there is anyway I can figure out how to come out later in the weekend, I'll let you know.

creative scheduling on my part. I hate to miss a trip to Arkansas. It's been nearly thirty years since my last visit. Although it's not the best time of year to flyfish the White River, I'd like to give that a go.

Yeah, many of the Max-Suzers have already reserved rooms at the Pine Lodge motel. There are only 10 rooms there so they may fill up. If most everyone doubles up in a room we should be OK though. If need be, there are a couple of other motels in Bull Shoals and the state park across the street does rent RVs to stay in. Also, the six kitchenettes at the Pine Lodge all have pull out beds (in addition to the 2 regular beds) and extra cots are available. If your not sure about what days you might stay later, just reserve the Thurs. through Sat. as those are the days that may fill up. I haven't decided on which days I'll arrive or leave yet. I'm flexable depending on what others may want to do. I do plan on staying at least one night somewhere else though to better explore other parts of AR and MO.

Lloyd, if you can work something out and all the rooms do book up, we will work something out and get you a bed.

Hello All! I have been hanging back not knowing about my days off with all of the overtime I have been doing this year. But I just found out today
that I was able to take the 22-25 off! So if you don;t mind I would like to join you all. I just live 70 miles from where you are going and thought I need, want, and should go! I have been all through that area manys times and there is also (I will have to get the map) a way you can just zig zag north and south almost all the way across the northern part of the state. very nice ride indeed and nice people with little " junk shops" with really neat stuff it has been a few years ago since I have been in that part but I do remember great hospitaly and nice folks plus a double decker outhouse in Booger Holler! Plus I will have the week before off too. Might be able to help out on some cordnating! I just got home from work but I will get the map out and try to remember the route. I will try and read all of the post to get caught up. Like I say if you all don't mind!
Thanks

Don't mind at all Brent, in fact, we'll be happy to have you! If you have ideas for routes, let us know. I have a couple routes mapped out already and have ideas for more. I'm hoping we'll split the riders into groups of 3-6 bikes.  That way we can form into easily manageable groups with the same goals in mind. Some groups could ride the same routes while others take longer or shorter routes or stop at more tourist locations. If you have some local knowledge of good eateries and interesting stops, that would be great. I'm going to experiment with my mapping software and see if I can upload my preliminary routes to the internet. Maybe, you or others could suggest some good stops or detours or alternate routes.

Hey Brent, thanks for bringing the list forward and updating your info. I was waiting untill we got to page 5 before bringing it forward.  I wouldn't worry about bringing up the rear. You'll probably have plenty of company with you. I would like to split the group according to riding paces and stopping frequencies, etc. That way, we can keep the groups pretty close together.

Which brings up the point that everyone is encouraged to ride at their own pace. If the group you are with is riding at a faster pace than you feel comfortable with, do not try to keep up. Everyone will happily wait for you up the road and make sure no one gets lost or misses a turn or gets left behind with some kind of trouble. This is not a race or a pissing match to see who's the fastest rider.

Craig, since half the folks are posted on the other board, can we work an e-mail list with everyone on it?  That way we can perhaps have some meet-ups, itineraries, and roommates worked out.

John

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing that. So here it goes. Everyone interested in being on a group e-mail list, send me an e-mail titled "Arkansas Ride" at gtbandit99@yahoo.com. Whenever I receive most everyone's e-mail addresses, I'll send out a bulk e-mail to everyone on the list. This way we can each contact either one person from either board to make plans or post to the group as a whole and we can exchange contact information.

Well crap,, I always wait too long! :crybaby:  :duh:
No really, I am glad you got a room,  after the long trip you have to make just to get to AR!
I think I will call her now and see what is just down the road.

gtbandit I have not had time to look get a good look at the map yet, but if you have maping software you have it made. I might just add for now 1 day might be Eureka Springs and another 1 day trip to Branson. the good fun all day would be like Ozark Nat. For. if you look you can see North and South hyways with short east to west roads like 71, 23, 74,21, 16, 103, 7, and 27 and all of it is a very nice ride. You can zig zag all throug the hills and 5 years ago they were all very nice roads. I just got off work I going to bed I will check the good map later!

Before anybody makes reservations elsewhere, let's get this e-mail list going first. (John I did get your e-mail address.) I would like to keep everyone together if at all possible. Especially, with alcohol being consumed after the rides. I will research other facilities just in case. Bull Shoals State Park across the street does have two RVs that stay on their facility for rent.

Brent, I have been through Arkansas a few times and am probably familiar with most of the good roads. My routes are planned around hitting as many great roads as possible while staying under 300 miles.

Here's a couple of other options for lodging if it should come to it: http://www.natconet.com/~dogwood/ and http://www.belarco.com/dining.htm. The Dogwood Lodge looks pretty good and is only a little more expensive than the Pinewood Lodge. The Bel' Arco Resort is a little pricier yet, but looks nice and has a restaurant on site.

Don`t feel bad I mounted up a three bag Givi set up. Custom made highway pegs( alittle more leg room). Made a gel seat pad to slip over the corbin. Mounted the gps and wired it up to 12 volts. I might even figer out some kind of music? The bike sure likes funny with hard bags and polished rims. Hey we can always laugh at each other :bigok: Can`t wait!

"How do you find room for a fishing pole on your bike? It must fold?"

Well yes sort of, I got one of those ultra light Shakespeare Excursion (Telescopic Fishing Kit) collapses down to about 16" inside a (20" Durable Carrying Case With Storage Compartments) from Wally World. I had not made any full measurements yet but I think I could put about 4 sticks of dynamite in the Case if the (4'6" Telescopic Fishing Kit With a Ball Bearing Spinning Reel and 4 lb Line) does not perform as advertised.
I know most of the trout fishing is done more with a fly rod but ,I thought the 7' rod ((2) one for me and one for my girlfriend) would look a little funny going down the boulevard. Yah know looking like a schooner with out riggers out for Marlin ................ Then I thought Hey just hang a corncob on a hook at the top of the "out rigger" and tell everyone that I was just trolling for Geese!    (Sorry I put in 72 hours last week at work and I need a nap)

OK! After spending several hours trying to figure out how to post routes using my map software, I finally figured out that I just couldn't get the routes posted with any amount of detail without it taking 5 pages to print each route. So, I decided to just scan the actual maps, then print them out, highlight them, re-scan them, and then figure out how to post them online in a usuable format. Of course, I still used my map software to figure times and distances. So, after many more hours, here we are: http://community.webshots.com/user/gtbandit . You can also print the maps in slighty lower quality from http://photos.yahoo.com/gtbandit99 . However, you cannot view or download them full size from that site.

On the maps, I used a pink highlighter to mark the main routes and used green or blue for alternate variations of those routes. The main Route 1 is about 287 miles and should take about 7 hrs. and 50 mins.according to my DeLorme map software. That should be about right considering fuel stops and scenic breaks. Possibly longer with a leisurely lunch break. Since this is a group event, figure on covering about 35 to 40 miles per hour average, possibly more if your group doesn't linger too long at stops. I figured in a lunch stop in Jasper (after the loop) at about 120 miles. This would make for an early lunch, but I really don't know of anywhere else down the line to stop to eat. If you take alternate route A, plan on adding about 63 miles to the main route. Alternate loop B will also add about 63 to your day. Alternate C just follows hwy 27 south past the second crossing of the Illinois Bayou just before the town of Hector, then turns around and backtracks to the main route. It will add about 44 miles of tight, smooth flowing twisties to your ride. Alternate D follows hwy 7 down to Dover where it picks up 27 north up to Tilly. It bypasses a really nice section of hwy 16, but it's a decent compromise. It will add about 33 miles to your route. If your looking to cut some time somewhere, you could skip the loop west of Jasper and hwy 7 and save about 48 miles.

Route 2 is on two overlapping pages. The main ride covers just under 250 miles and should take a little under 7 hrs. according to my software. I figured on a lunch stop in Yellville about 136 miles into the day. Flippin is about 7 miles to the east if some of y'all would rather eat there. If anybody has any other suggestions for lunch stops that would work with these routes, please let me know. Alternate route A should form the top half of a figure of eight. It will add about 64 miles to the main route. Alternate B just follows hwy 9 to Melbourne, then turns around back towards hwy 5. It adds about 40 miles to the day, but should be well worth it. Alternate route C forms a loop that includes hwy 9 and will add about 56 miles to your day. If this is the only day ride your doing, you may want to consider going up hwy 341 instead of hwy 5. Something else to consider, would be to do either a 1 hr. or 1-1/2 hr. tour through Blanchard Caverns. According to the map, they are located off hwy 14 between hwys 87 and 9.

Of course, these routes are only suggestions. Feel free to ride your own ride and plan your routes. Just meet up at the motel in the evening for some socializing. I was planning on adding another full day route and some half day routes too. But, I've already spent way more time than I was suppose to on these routes. However, if you need some suggestions for another route, let me know and I'll gladly give you some ideas.

I will be bringing some FRS/GMRS handheld radios too. I bought them to use bike to bike, but never got around to getting the rest of the set up. Anyway, I figure we could use them if one of the groups got split up. There are certain roads (123, 125, 341) that it is better to let everyone ride at his pace and meet up at a pre-designated meeting point. If the lead rider and sweep rider each had radios, we could at least radio before turning around. On most of the rest of the roads, each rider will be responsible for watching for the person riding immediately behind him. That way, if one persons stops, the whole group stops one by one. In that instance, the radios will still come in handy, because their still could be a good bit of seperation.

I just got back.  I left early to beat the rain.  Big event, only one cancellation and two or three "walk-ins" that didn't post.

If you don't know. Craig is a fireman from Beaumont TX.  He's trying to get his wife up to the Pine Lodge.  She and Craig's in-laws were playing hop scotch trying to catch up with him. I am sure that everyone wishes Craig the best & hope his house and belongings are OK.  Craig is in touch with his department and his family, and still organizing the ride.

Took some excellent roads yesterday for about 300 miles.  Hwy 123 as usual but also Hwy341 for the first time.  Really great sweepers, perhaps my favorite road yet.

No accidents in our group (so far, knock wood).  But did see one pretty bad one.  Ionically there was a group of four GSX-1100G shafties (they look lilke Bandits with shaft drives from early 90s). One of the younger riders lost it on 123, went in the ditch & hit some rocks.  His knees had bad road rash, and he apreared to be in shock.  The front end, bars & cock pit were pretty mangled.  Was suprising the rider wasn't more serious.

Accomodations were OK.  A bargain for the cost but no service while you're there.  Most rooms had kitchenettes & fridges.  Mine was $45 a nite.  We got tub full of beer and sat under a covered pavillion.  Had cigars the first night.  Was up till 2 last nite.  I think Devilman was up till 3.

Next time I want to stay longer and take the ferry over the lake. I think I missed that today by leaving. The main group was riding from there to Missouri.  Hopefullly the rain will miss them.

That's the run down.

John

+1 on LowRyter's report..... Terrebandit & I considered canceling all together but figured we could meet and greet and get some good riding in before the storm hit.  We left Tyler at 7am Thursday and arrived Bull Shoals at 7pm after 450 miles of back roads.  Our original plan was altered due to the evacuee traffic up 59 into Texarkana.  The only real snag was construction on 27 that left us sitting on the road for 1/2 hour... stuck in 100 degree heat and no way to really get comfortable.

Meeting everyone that night over some beers was very cool... finally got to put some faces with the screen names here.  Also, seeing 15 or so Bandits at once was something else especially how unique the machines were.  The lodge manager took several group photos the next morning before our ride and those should be posted in the future.

After breakfast Friday morning we split up into groups and headed out to some of the sweetest roads I have been on.  You are almost thankful for a straight stretch of road to get prepared for the next set of twisties.  We rode about 150 miles with the group before stopping to eat lunch but Dave & I said our goodbyes and headed off to beat the storm.  Our ride home included Scenic 7 which was another 4 hours or so of twists and turns before slabbing it back to Texas.  Arrived safely about 10pm after 525 miles for the day.

I gotta tell ya... the SuzukiFieldshearSidiLoobmanShoeiAvonRentecMobiloneBandit machine was just awesome out there... I couldn't have done without 'em!!   :beers:

A huge  :thanks:  goes out to gtbandit for organizing this thing and best wishes to him and his family since Rita made a near direct hit in his home town.  Our part of East Texas had some rain and a lot of wind but we are much better off than those further east.

I enjoyed meeting those that showed and this ride is a must do in the future!!

I think John and Jay summed things up pretty good.

I had a great time too but wish we could have stayed longer.  We did make the right call to come home before Rita hit.  We're all wishing Craig and his family the very best.  Let me know if you need anything Craig.  We have an extra bed here if you need it.

John and Jay pretty much summed it up. I'll just add that it was great to see old friends again and twice as good to meet new ones.

“Just a made it home safe post, need sleep! 2,579 miles. will post up later. :bigok:  ”
“Larry the Cable Guy” ………… I mean JR (12sdrag)….. Departed Sat night up to ST. Louis to Interstate 70 then east to beat the rain.
Hey JR that was a pretty good wheelie you did to start out on the trip home. :stickpoke:  Glad you made it safe!
“I think Devilman was up till 3.”
Yeah he kept 12sdrag and I up till 3:00am, we did solve some of the problems of the world (as far as we know).  :beers:

“I hope that Craig, his loved ones and their property was spared from any harm.”
Craig’s family made it up to Pine lodge fine. A big pine tree, next to Craig house, fell and missed. But it did take out the power line and the meter and he will have to redo the electric service. So it sounds like not much if any structure damage.

I had a great time and was my first time to meet everyone. I told Craig that he did a great job of thinking up and organizing the meet! I wished I had more time to get around to everyone and get to know you guys better.
Terrebandit and Txbanditrydr glad you guys made it home ok and everything is fine there. And thanks for putting up with me and my “Bunny Slope” skills!
Buggyho Your pictures turned out very good! Nice to see that many Bandits in a row!
Well today when we got up it is was raining. Devilman said road trip! Well ok, too wet…. Lets ride to breakfast.
Well it is too wet to ride home……..
Now What........ lets go play miniature Golf….in the rain!   Well you know.
So about 4:00pm after saying goodbye to Craig…. Devilman, Lacinda, Gloria and myself left out, them east and us west.
Gloria and I hit bright sunny skies, 20 miles down the road. So we rode off into the Sunset
GOOD TIMES

Gtbandit did a great job putting this all together :thanks:. Except for the rain home I had a great time. Everyone made me feel welcome and part of the family.btw thanks for the clock. It was the long distance award.A clock that looks like a giant fishing lure. It will always hang in my shop with pride. I hope to meet more of you at the next rally.

Yeah... he's back but working his butt off 12hr days.  He should be posting up in a week or so.  Looks like his house did okay but the power situation is a mess and will be for a quite a while.

I made it home Wed. night and went straight to work. I've been missing out on some overtime. We don't get O.T. very often, so we take it when we can. We're actually spending 24 hrs. at the station, but are only assigned to the apparatus for 12 hr. shifts. The remaining time there is still stuff to do around the station with all the relief efforts going on, but we are permitted to leave for short periods of time as long as someone stays at the station at all times.

My house is missing several shingles and in some places is bare to the plywood. My large pine tree completely uprooted but managed to miss my house :rant2: It did take out my neighbor's and my fences and some power lines. I'm still not sure of the extent of flooding from the storm surge, but it didn't effect my house.

I had a great time at the rally and want to thank everyone who showed up for a great time. Other than being unseasonably hot, the weather was quite good; very occasional light showers on Saturday with light rain Sunday morning and early afternoon then clearing up . I rode the area some more on Monday then moved to the west on Tuesday when my wife and family left.

Linda, the motel owner, gave me a good deal on the room rates since we were refugees. She said everyone was very nice and left the rooms neat. She gave me a cd with all the pictures that she took. Once I get to use my personal computer, I'll upload them to the net along with some of my own pictures. That may be a couple of weeks before that happens though.

The storm damage was worse than I thought it would be. There are trees and power lines down everywhere throughout the city and quite a bit of damage to buildings. There was considerable damage and power outages over 100 miles inland.

I look forward to seeing all of you again. Check back later for some pics!

I finally had time to get some of my trip photos uploaded the net. I didn't take that many photos on this trip and didn't take any at the motel. Linda (the motel owner) gave me the wrong CD so I don't have those pictures either. I'll give her a call soon and see if I can get the right CD.

This is along Hwy 7 on the trip up.

In true biker form, we held a wet T-shirt contest!

I'm not sure where this picture was taken.

Five miles later, I was relieved to know that I at least 194 other people had no @$#%ing clue where I was either!

I know, I just thought it was funny. I was checking out Caddo Lake State Park, saw the sign and couldn't resist.

I updated the link to the rest of my photos. Hopefully, this should work: http://community.webshots.com/user/gtbandit
