I have a 01 1200 that I just picked up from a guy that hasnt really seen the open road for a while I think. It starts right up but throws an obsene amount of white smoke. The gas is really pouring into it. It has a full tank of gas now and what I was going to do is drain the tank, put some fresh gas with some carb cleaner in it and try running it a bit. If this doesnt work should I do the trick of seeing where my carb adj is by putting all the carb adj screws in and writing down how many turns each one is at, then start adjusting from there or am I going in the totally wrong direction?

Nothing wrong with that, but check the condition of the air filter first. If it's not getting enough air, it'll be rich, too. Air boxes make nice mouse nests on bikes that sit.

When I got my B6 it had been sitting unused for over a year.  I pulled the tank and drained it and the carbs.  Since the tank was off I put in new spark plugs.  Air filter was fine so I just put in a new battery.  I drained the oil and put in fresh so I knew it was okay.  I then put in fresh gas and it started up and ran good (as good as a non-jetted B6 can run). If you had fuel in the crankcase I would put in some cheap oil, run it a few minutes, drain, then put in the good stuff.  If your carbs have gummed there are some good posts about adding in some Chevron gas additive.

thanks guys. I will prolly get around to it next week when I get time. BTW I tried to change the oil and the filter would not come off. I have a cap type wrench that goes on it and it is so tight that it doesn't stay on the filter long ebough to unseat it. Would the plier type get better leverage?

Try the good old fashioned hammer and screwdriver method for stubborn filters :wink:

Welp, it must have been a bunch of water in the tank. I drained it and put some gas in with some carb cleaner and it doesn't blow a ton of smoke anymore. Whew. Getting all that off there and getting to the carbs seems to be a pain if I were going to adjust them at all.

I would take a nice long run on the highway to get the juices flowing agian then fill back up with 87. Enjoy the new bike and welcome.
