Riding without oil filler cap in place - Possible damage?
« on: January 04, 2009, 10:21:35 PM »
Hi guys,

I recently went for a ride on my GSX 650F after replacing the oil and noticed halfway through the ride that I had failed to replace the oil filler cap  :duh:  I rode maybe 25km at an average speed of 100km/h before I noticed the oil that had sprayed up my foot and onto the bike.  I checked the oil level, which actually didnt look like it had dropped much, then plugged the hole and rode back.

Does riding without the oil filler cap in place cause any risk of engine damage?  The bike still runs OK but I am wondering if I have shortened it's life at all.

The only risk as long as you don't lose to much oil would be if something like a small rock or something hard like that got into the engine. If you did not notice any problems riding home, I doubt you have anything wrong in the engine.

I would recommend doing another oil change just to be sure, just the oil. The filter should be fine.
