You generally don't need to run a higher octane fuel unless you are doing mods and are getting any chance of detonation (pinging), so generally you can use the lowest octane that does not ping.

The only other reason to consider premium fuel is that most major oil companies add additional detergent additives that "may" be beneficial.

There is one other old axiom that holds true...run what works, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I read an article in Road Runner magazine that stated most higher octane fuels get the rating by using anti knock additives instead of actually raising the octane level. Their suggestion was to run regular. From their info it has higher actual octane rating than "super". I have a '97 1200 with 52 K on it and I just switched to regular about 3 tanks ago. It certainly doesn't run any worse, maybe even a little better as measured with my arse dyno.  :motorsmile:
