Accel Coils: Buyer BEWARE!

If you are considering after market coils please visit:
              Accel: Buyer BEWARE!! http://www.motorcycleadventuremap.com/accel.htm

Accel’s inadequate coil application procedures threaten to destroy your motorcycles ignition system.  It appears, they couldn't care less!!!

Hi Gary,

It appears you're the complaining party in this situation.  Somebody else has posted a link recently to your page about Accel.

I'd prefer you be willing to answer questions about your problems with accel, rather than join the board to just post a gripe, and then vanish.

I'm not sure what your intentions are, so I apologize if I'm jumping to conclusions!
You're welcome to participate in this board!!

No problem!   Sometimes we get people that join the board to post a complaint, then never come back.
It's nice to know about 'problem vendors'.......but sometimes we don't get the whole story!
 :duh:

Thanks for replying, and stick around if you feel like it!

I dunno...

I read through this before, and from my understanding when you finally did contact Accel they did tell you that you'd purchased and installed the inproper components. Reading through the post, it looks like you never contacted Accel prior to purchasing, and instead went on what some guy behind a parts counter said.

As such, I don't see how it's Accel's fault that a dealer sold you the incorrect compnent. I'd be blaiming the dealer that sold you the component and raising big stink. It's obvious that Accel knew the coils were the wrong ones, the question I have is why didn't the dealers? Were they simply to lazy to look the part numbers up? I've seen that before, it's not uncommon. I've found it's much easier (less headaches) to actually go to a dealer with a part number that you want, instead of trusting them to look it up.

That being said, it really -sucks- that it burned out your Igniter. I hope you've fixed the problem and gotten back on the road. Your post -did- prompt me to look closer at my own application, since I do intend on putting Accel coils on the bike (the stockers cost about the same and would take 3-6 months to recieve, Accel would take 2 weeks).

BTW, welcome to the board!

I believe all these dealers did the best they could with what they had.

The voltage test accel details in catalogs (denis kirk would be one) yields .3 (3/10) of a volt on 1200 Bandits.  Accel says voltage indicates CDI...no voltage indicates inductive?  Is .3 (3/10) voltage??

The first I heard of the ohms test was from the accel phone tech who told me I had the wrong coils and probably a cooked ignition system. He was correct on both counts.  He also told me there are holes in accel's application procedures.

This happened last August.  Bike was back on the road in about a week.
Stock coils, solid wire spark plug wires ($12 Drag Specialties). Used Automotive silicon to seal/glue new wires into stock coils.  This all started to eliminated a recurring problem I was having with the spark plug wires/caps on this bike.  So far (4,000+ miles, not exactly an endurance test) the present set up is working fine.

Ran the "correct" accel coils for about a week.  Definitely not as smooth as stock (felt like a bit of lean surge which accel mentions as a possiblity) and lots of static when listing to music which I almost always do.
