Title: Air Filter Changing

Any of you ever changed your own air filter on your B12?  Is it very difficult to get to?  Any tips?

done it on a few bikes, not B12 and its simple to do. you cant go wrong doing it really to tell you the truth.  :beers:  :beers:

Tip... do it when you have the tank off for other maintenance like valve adjust or plug replacement.

be fairly hard to do without tank off mate.

Well technically you can prop the rear end of the tank up with a board and not fully remove it but it's a real PITA.

Yep - I agree with TXBANDITRYDR.

Better off yet, go ahead and change your plugs and do other maintenance when it is time to change the filter.

My bike only has 7000 on it and is on her 4th set of plugs.  Keep it clean.

I got lazy last week and did not remove the tank to change the airfilter, just lifted the rear of the gas tank.

Might be a lame question: does the tank need to be empty of gas to take it off, or can you leave the gas in it?

In the haynes manual it says to turn the switch to ON! It even has it in bold text I think. Then to remove the switch. Why, who knows! ??
Everytime ive done it its been in the reserve anyway so it hasnt made any difference so....

On my other bikes I just turned it to off and its been fine.

The petcock can be left in the ON or RESERVE position and no fuel will flow when the engine is not running.  Do not remove the fuel lines with the petcock in the PRIME position.

The tank does not need to be drained to change the air filter, however I don't recommend topping the tank off due to the extra weight involved.  The petcock handle should be removed to provide clearance when removing the tank or simply raising it up.

Hey I just replaced mine and noticed it sounded a bit different. Splashed some carb cleaner in tank (maybe too much) and took for test drive to close gas station. Noticed surging after 3k rpm. Is there an up or down orientation on air filter? I know it only goes in one way. Or is sputter probably from too much carb cleaner??

There isn't any Up or Down to worry about....  you might recheck any vacumn and vent hoses that were removed and make sure they are hooked up in the proper location.

This is from my new 06 B12 shop manual. "When installing the air cleaner element into the air cleaner box, make sure that the mark points "A" up."
But close inspection of mine shows no difference to me which way is up. You know them Japanese.

Upon further evaluation - I think the Bandit just doesnt like too much carb cleaner. Just put about 80 miles on it and kept filling it up and finally she's starting to be her bad old self. Ive used carb cleaner before but less. this time I just splashed a little under half the bottle in (it was STP). Ill have to be more precise next time.
