Want to graft car horn to Bandit 1200
« on: October 10, 2005, 10:38:03 AM »
I hate my horn...big fast bike...little sissy "beep-beep" horn!

My Audi A6 has a horn like a freight train!  I want to put it on the Bandit.  I know I may have to fabricate a bracket.  I figure it's to much of a drain for my current horn's wiring.  What do I need to do, exactly, so I don't blow my electrical system?

Any reason I shouldn't do it?

Radio Shack makes a fairly small relay with 20 Amp rating on the contacts that would work well

Run a fairly heavy duty (14 gauge) wire from the battery to one of the relay contacts and then from the other contact to the horn.  The two original wires can be connected to the relay coil to operate it.   You'll probably need to run a ground wire from the frame or forks to one of the contacts on the horn and the other horn contact will be fed by the wire from the relay.

The coil consumes a low current and the higher horn current will be switched by the relay.

The Radio Shack relay has a mounting tab that will probably fit readily on some mounting bolt near the horns.

I installed a hella horn from these guys:

HL66019 I think.  It had to bend the original bracket slightly to fit it, but that was it.  Unfortunately, it's not out of the way of the rain, but I haven't had a chance to get it wet yet. It's also bigger than stock, so it doesn't look as integrated into the body.

The thing is LOUD.  My diamond star headlight modulator is wired to go off for a few seconds when I press the horn button, it's quite a show :)
