Definitely smellier...lends to that overall "motorcycle experience", sights sounds smells...seriously, I notice a big difference now with the crankcase breather filter (I have no airbox) vs. my old bike that had an airbox - at a dead stop you can see the mist coming out.  Not aware of any advantages.

If you pull the airbox, you "should" add a filter to the crankcase  vent(s). In stock form, the breather connects to the "clean" air side of the airbox, which allows it to vent fumes back into the engine, but also ensures only filtered air is drawn back into the engine through the breather.

If you go with POD filters, you no longer have an airbox to vent/supply from. If you leave the vent open, you risk drawing a little unfiltered air back into the engine. Not much, but it is better to have a filter on it.

I too am running pods, but I just went down to Autozone and bought a clamp on filter for the vent.  It was chrome and sorta nice I suppose and best of all it was cheap $10.  I smell engine every once in a while too.  I checked for oil leaks for a while till I realized where it was coming from.
