Condensation in Spark plug caps and plug housing.
« on: May 30, 2005, 05:22:24 AM »
Everytime after there's a down pour, I notice the engine becomes rough. On checking, I noticed water condensation in the spark plug caps and the area around the spark plug. I also noticed that the rubber seals that are supposed to keep the plug area free from water has breather holes in them.  :duh:

To solve this maddening problem, I applied some clear silcon very sparsely over the "holes" as well as around the rubber seals of the HT cables. I left one "hole" clear, for obvious reasons.

Saves spending about S$100 for a set of 4 plug caps and their rubbers. Now, rain doesn't worry me anymore.

I'm not sure this is your problem.  I think those holes are to promote air flow around the plug, to reduce heat, and keep the plug area dry.  What you did will increase condensation/moisture, IMO.  If any water accumulates in there, it is supposed to drain out the weep hole in the head.  You should check to see if those holes are clear/not blocked.

Additionally, you may want to add a dab of dielectric grease to the spark/lead connection.

Thanks Terre, Paul.

Weep holes, now that's something new to me so I gotta check it out. I bought this bike 2nd hand and thus don't have any owners manual. So I learn as I go along with my basic vehicle maintenance knowledge that I acquired some 30 years ago.
