Title: Diagnose my Bandit 600 - NO NEUTRAL LIGHT!!!??? Thanks 4help
Post by: bebar10 on April 18, 2005, 12:24:33 AM
I would very much appreciate ANY feedback you guys could give me
regarding repairs for my 2001 Suzuki Bandit 600cc. I've exhausted
everything I know (limted) in regards to combustion engines and the
electical system trouble shooting this.

What happened?
Went to start the bike for a first ride in several months.
Battery dead.
Jumped bike, went out riding to put some charge in the battery.
Gunned it down a hill and downshifted.
Lost electical power, LOUD backfire sound, then tried to role-start it
while coasting down hill. No luck.

Where I am now?
With jumper cables hooked up to my car, I can get power to headlights,
oil indicator light, etc...on the bike.

BUT - THE NEUTRAL LIGHT DOES NOT LIGHT EVEN WHEN I CAN VERIFY THE
TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL. NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN I HIT THE STARTER -
not even a click. All fuses, including master and acessory have been
checked.

Why would the neutral light not come on? Is there a relay in the
starter? Could the starter be fried?

ANY AND ALL ADVICE WOULD BE WELCOMED - poor medical student over
here...looking to get this thing up and running on my own.

Thanks,
Ben

Did you try the starter with the clutch lever pulled in?
If it'll start that way, there's probably an open in the neutral light wiring or you have a defective neutral safety switch.

If it won't start with the clutch lever pulled in, then you have a problem in the starter circuit.

you may have a totally dead battery. take it and have it tested.
if it has died completely it wont complete the electrical circuit even when the engine is running.
try a friends battery otherwise and see if that works.
