Author Topic: Emergency Autoinflation Cans (Read 3404 times)

Has anyone ever used one of those $8 cans that will inflate, sorta seal a tire enough to "Get you home"?
It probably wrecks the tire, but I've never had & puncture and resused a tire anyway. I thought it always happened on gravel, (sonstruction?), where metal chips work harden and spall off of old graders, (these iron potato chips got me twice).

However, last time was right in the city where some junker truck dropped a 1/4 x 3" bolt. Usually I find the assasin right in the tire but in this case part of it was still sticking out.

The front tire flips 'em up and the rear tire dies.

I jus thought the can might get me home some night.

I don't know if those products have gotten any better in the last few years, but last time I read anything about them, they cause a helluva mess to the wheel, too - and the stuff is a HazMat nightmare to deal with.

A better idea might be to just carry a tire plug kit and strip the compressor (which is actually pretty small) from a cheapy $10 Wal-Mart 12V compressor and replace the cig plug with a couple of suitable alligator clips.

the tyre plug set i have came with 2 CO2 canisters and a little valve to inflate the tyre enough to get you home/to a service station

i think it takes several of these cannisters to inflate a tire. I think I've heard 7 or 8?

That's what I've heard, too - which is why I suggested the cheapy 12v compressor... takes up about the same amount of space as a CO2 inflator and a few cartridges and will give you air for more than one tire - and you won't have to buy cartridges.

I just bought one of the CO2 tire inflater / repair kits for the bike. The package states 4 of the 16 gram cylinders will take a 180 tire to 32 psi. I was wanting a little peace of mind when traveling alone yet did not want to tote a relatively heavy compressor. Terrebandit showed me his "stripped" compressor and that is the thing to have for a long trip but IMHO the CO2 will get you out of a bind or at least to the next gas station.

Hopefully I'll never have to post a product review.
