well finally stripped down the engine, quote : Well got the beast ( gsxr 400 gk76 ) running after the valve timing was set up right and the all the other bodges were sorted out from the previous owner lol !!. But now theres a nasty knocking noise from down below !!!!. I reckon its the big ends , first can any one tell me are they roller bearing or shell bearing big ends, drained the oil and can find no metal particles, just hoping the owner did some thing stupid like not tightening up something, which is possible if you saw some of the things I have seen
Any way the the big ends were fine no play or wear, mains were fine no pick ups, rings fine (none broken ), pistons fine only i did notice slight rubbing marks on top of one piston ( generator side)possibly the valve touching it has the valve had some rubbing very very slight. Anyway stripped all the valves down none damaged or bent move freely , no damage to the head, cam shafts fine not worn, also there bearing caps were fine. THING IS WHAT WAS THE KNOCKING NOISE ????, cant find any metal particles, or any thing damaged, nothin at all ????????. Can any of you guys help me or come up with some ideas ????, am i missing something ??

Define Down below? Left side or right?
Does it make a difference clutch in or out? I ask, cos a worn clutch basket can make a sort of knocking noise....

Ahhh...this is where the ol' mechanic's stethiscope can come in handy.
A big screwdriver...push the handle end hard against your ear (or even a bony part of your skull will work!), and poke the metal end around your engine case. You can easily get a good idea as to exactly where the noise is comming from as well as hear the noise very clearly. Always useful when trying to diagnose a mystery noise.

well found out what the problem was, the previous owner had lost one of the bolts that holds the cam sprocket on, so he replaced it with a bolt and nut, and the nut was hitting the inside of the engine as it went round !!!!!!!!!!!! big scrape marks where it was catching, jesus to think these people have the vote , now thats scarey. Well she's back together now , lovely and quiet and smooth , just got to sort out the carbs now as there settings are all over the place lol
