Electrical mystery, and a couple other issues
« on: August 17, 2006, 09:49:17 AM »
1-  My 01 B12 fell over while parked, resulting in a broken left blinker.
I replaced the housing, using the original (single filament) bulb and wiring.
The connector from the bike has three female terminals.

A-constant power
B-blinks
C-seems to do nothing.  Not a ground, no power regardless of lights, blinkers, etc.

On the other side of the bike, the blinker is just a blinker, no running light.

I have temporarily solved the problem by wiring the bulb to terminal B, and grounding it to the frame.  I would like to fix it properly.
Any thoughts?

2-  I know this has been covered, but I still can't figure out headlight adjustment.  Each side has a philipps screw accessible through the fairing, as well as a 10 mm bolt under the light.  Are these the adjusters?
Riding at night is scary on this bike.  I know various folks have used various remedies, but I figure I'll start with the basics, and work from there.

3-  Fairing removal.  Took off all the silver Allen bolts I saw on the left side.  Found at least one part that just snaps in and out.  Still couldn't get side of fairing off, and am a little worried about cracking the plastic if I do it wrong.

I appreciate any help anybody has to offer.  I don't post often, but I read this forum regularly.  It's my primary resource for the bike, and the first place I go when I look for info-or amusement.

Thanks- HH

Hi,

This link will get you to online manuals that will help with fairing removal, et al:

http://forums.banditalley.net/viewtopic.php?t=877

There should also be a wiring diagram in the haynes manual.  The Bikes wiring harness (US version) is set up with a 3 wire plug like the Euro version (intended to use turn signal as running light and blinker) but IIRC it is not connected to anything (US version).  Therefore you should be running one wire for ground and one for power.  A dual filament bulb and houseing will have 3 wires (one for constant) that can be set up as a running light but can also be left unattached so the unit will function as just a trun signal.  In other words you are correct the third female terminal does nothing.  One is for ground the other for blinking...I don't remember the colors but they would be in the wiring diagram.

I have not adjusted the headlight so no help there, sorry.  That would be in the manual as well, though.

By the fairing removal description it sounds like you have a 1G??  If you do you need to remove the windscreen, then the "dash board" black plastic piece directly behind the windscreen.  That will expose 2 more screws that hold the fairing on.  In addition there are 2 screws underneath the headlight that need to be removed.

Hope this helps!!

I figured that the three prong might be for a different market that uses running lights.  The wierd thing is that none of the three work as a ground.  I figure maybe when the bike fell, the ground wire got disrupted.
What I have now works, and I will probably wait until I have to take stuff apart anyway to fix it right.

Thanks for that link- I am downloading a manual now, as I speak.  Looks good.

Thanks again.

I've had the fairings off a couple times...not hard at all, just have to keep gently pulling to see where they are still connected to something.  As Brandon said, you have to take the mirrors off to take the windscreen off, to take the fairing off...not hard at all, just keep track of which bolt/snap came from where.

Not sude I understand your turn indicator problem.  If you replace the existing one with either an OEM or an aftermarket, you have the original wiring and connector to work with.  Done that more than a couple times and "never had no trouble".
