Title: i think i broke it

well i was rideing to work today having a lil bit of fun with these kids i know from work. well its started to make a grinding sound.  but it only did it when the motor was in gear  but if i was to pull the clutch in it would sound fine but as soon as i put it into gear it would do it again. im thinkin i need to change the oil??  i realy dont know. i just changed the oil like 150 miles ago. last weekend....   any ideas??????

You got me?  Might be something to do with the transmission since it only makes the noise when it's in gear.  Or a clutch problem?

If it only does it in gear, with the clutch out, sounds more like you have a transmission problem.

Without being able to hear it, could be anything. Most common things to happen, bent shift forks, followed by bad bearings or chipped/broken gears

one more thing it only does it when the bike is warm if it has been sittin in the garage all night. it wont do it till about 15 minutes into the ride. after this bike has had pleanty of time to warm up.

I would start with the easiest and cheapest avenue first.  The clutch.  Being there is no noise when cold is strange, leads me to believe sticking clutch plates.  You may have some bad glaze on them.  The clutch is fairly easy to service and friction plates are cheap if you shop around.  There are posts in here on R & R.

i was riding the bnike yesterday with out a helmet so i could get a better hear onj whats up and i think its the chain....  that or poss the rear wheel bearings...  what kinda sounds would a 7 yrs old chain with 25k on it make

Depends on how often you lubed the chain. if its the chain thats a good thing, cos its piss cheap to fix.

Check to see if the back wheel is aligned properly if you think it might be the chain. If it isnt you can get some horrible noises when under load.

25k on the chain? That could be the culprit there.  i would start with a new chain and sprockets.  You may have a lot of slop in the chain so it could be striking things in the countershaft cover as its a tight fit in there.  For the rear wheel bearings, have a buddy hold the bike.  Grab the top of the rear wheel and yank side to side real hard.  You'll feel and hear if there's any slop.  If you're changing the rear sprocket you'll have the wheel off anyway so it might be worth taking a look.

My chain got noisy enough to hear with a helmet on after riding 8 hours in pouring rain one summer.   I followed/paced a tropical storm front from Texas all the way across Mississippi.  The next day after about a 300 mile run I heard it and lubed it, but the chain was  toast by then.  Enough rain on a hot chain will wash the lube off.  The chain had about 21,000 miles on it and had been lubed regularly.

With 21K on the chain, sounds more like a coincidence... that pretty decent mileage out of a chain. You might have milked a couple more thou out of it without the rain bit, but it's pretty rare to get much more than that out of a chain unless you're using an auto-oiler of some sort.

ok well now that you say the rain. i drove it to work one day last week and got caught in the rain 1/2 way there. ahhh that sucked but the noise started after that....  but i took it to a bike shop round here and the guy said is was my rear brake pads after looking at the bike.  ya the rear pads where prettty much toast so i replaced them but its still making noise just not as loud now.... hmmmmmm

If the noise got quieter this may be the source.  The pad could be moving around in the caliper.  I'd pull the caliper off and make sure the piston is moving properly, it could be gunked up.  Squirt some  WD 40 around the piston and move it in & out a few times.  This should free things up.

yep it was the chain, i got my can of spay oil stuff out today and sprayed the chain down and well it dont make a sound now!!! wahooo...   good thing the guy told me bout the break though too but im gonna replace the chain anyways just cause. thanks all
