Title: Installing new grips - trim throttle tube?

I put foam grips on before the start of the year, the previous grips were stock.  Anyway, I installed the right one and couldn't push it on all the way because of the white ring that is part of the throttle sleeve.  I just sort of stretched it over that ring.  The grip has started to tear because of it.  What's the deal?  Are we supposed to cut the ring off?

NO. You're supposed to butt the grip up against it, unless your grip has a slot for it, and foam grips probably don't due to their material and bulk.

I shaved the ridge off when I installed new grips.  I guess it's supposed to be another precaution to keep the grips from screwing up the throttle action, but it looks like hell..........
 I haven't had any problems with it missing.. :motorsmile:

The thought of removing it didn't even occur to me when I put the grips on.  If you just butt the grip up to it, then it is about 1/2 inch from the end.  Sort of looks like crap.  I'll have to debate whether or not I do it with my next grip change (which may not be that far off considering my problem)

Yeah,it's worth shaving the ridge off.  I used a sharp knife, then sanded it down a bit.  A dremel tool would work fine, also.

  Also....use cheap hair spray to glue the grips on.  It doesn't stick quite as well as 'grip glue', but in normal use the grips stay on fine, and are easier to remove if you have to.
  I bought  can of some kind of hair spray at the dollar store for guess.....yes...a dollar!

 Just clean off the tube or bar, spray it down well, and slide the grip on....

A dremel tool works just fine if you use a sanding drum and are patient. That's what I did with mine.

Use to sand them off myself too but I found that its just a waste of time.  Just run it up to the ridge and trim the grip off a bit on the end if you need to.

If you don't like the white showing, just paint it flat black.  I don't even bother with that.

When I put on new grips, I use the air chuck on the end the grip and give it the air while pushing it on. It goes on a bit easier.
