Title: Japanese standard phillips
Post by: bikeb4cage on May 04, 2007, 11:03:05 PM: Came across an article on page 176 of the latest Motorcyclist mag (the one with the Ducati 999 and 1098 on the cover) - seems there is a different spec phillips screwdriver meant to be used on screws used on Japanese bikes...according to the article the drivers are suited for the troublesome carb float bowl screws - the screwdrivers are Japanese Industrial Standard JIS 4633B-3/1991 and DIN/ISO standard 5260.

I'd be happy with everything going hex/torx. Anything that can't be easily stripped. The annoying think about phillips is that if you don't have the exact size (ph3, ph1, etc.) it's too easy to ruin the screw/bolt and have to start over.

You hate Phillips? How about tri-wing - like a Phillips, but insteat of a "+" head, it's a "Y."
I used to run into those working on 727's. :gagme:
Just another way to sell us tools. They can all strip given enough corrosion of ham-fisted installers - or both.

Sounds like something French. Why not have some 5-sided bolts while you're at it?

Post by: longislandbandit99 on May 11, 2007, 12:16:52 AM: Is the article referring to Posi drive screws? They are phillips head screws but the top of the screw driver is a bit wider in width. In other words if you look at the star pattern of the phillips, each slot is wider in thickness if you stare straight down the top of the driver. Yamaha uses them on their outboard motors. Standard Phillips will strip a posi drive screw.

Post by: Red01 on May 11, 2007, 10:18:37 AM: No, they aren't Pozidrive... but according to the Ames site, you can use a JIS Phillips in a Pozidrive, but the JIS Phillips doesn't have the ridge a Pozidrive screwdriver has.

What I found interesting though, is that JIS Phillips, Pozidrive and American/European Phillips tips all meet DIN/ISO standard 5260.

Post by: okbandit on May 11, 2007, 10:59:03 AM: The JIS screws have a little dot on them as a marking or warning. The right screw driver does help, like the one that's supposed to be under everyones seat :roll: Can't imagine where all of those end up. Out of 3 bikes I have 1 set that is complete.
