It's possible you put too much oil on the filter, that will cause the plugs to foul. My 97 b12 will foul the plugs if I start it up cold and don't ride it , like if I start it up and ride into the back yard to put it away without goin for a ride to get some heat in the cyls.

I just thought of something else, if the guy you got it from had a pipe on and replaced the stocker when he sold the bike to you so he could use it on another bike, the stock can could foul the pulgs if the jetting is for a free breathing aftermarket system..

I just noticed this thread is a month old, did you get it straightened out?

Crap......I must be getting old, because on the long hauls that's extactly how I ride...thankgod for the throttle lock, now all I need is the highway pegs.

My fouling problem continues.  I decided to take the carbs off, which is quite simple, and give them a cleaning.  I did this because when I was syncing my carbs, I had constant fuel flow using a water bottle and some fittings.  Well, needless to say, the next thing I know is tbat I had gas coming out from somewhere behind the airbox pouring on my chain.  I guess it was coming from the vents that go in back of the airbox. Well I yanked the carbs out and found that I had 127.5 main jets and 35 pilot jets.  I think this is the stage 1 sizes.  I told the mechanic at the dealer I bought it from and he gave me some 112.5's and some shims if I needed to adjust the needle.  The float needle valve is my main concern though.  None of them look distorted.  They still have a good taper but for some reason do not seem to be sealing.  The floats are at the correct measurement.  I am soaking them in some seafoam to see if I can clean them up.  For 30 buck a piece for the needle vavle at the stealership, I'll do anything I can to get them to seat properly.  What does everyone else use for a thick varnish buildup?

My bike is missing from idle to 3500 rpm.  Then it takes off like a bullet.  I have not had a chance to tear into it, but I do know the plugs are aleast 1 year old.  Do I need to pull the frame cover and faring off to clean the filter(K&N) and change the plugs.  The previous owner is still looking for the stock tools, so I dont have a plug wrench to fit.  Thank you   :beers:

No, the air filter is under the seat. Nothing needs to come off the bike for new plugs besides the plug wires... but it is easier to do a plug change with the tank off, especially if you don't have the stock tool kit or a plug socket with wrench flats on it.

So, I changed my plugs, and oiled up my K&N. The plugs looked good.  No carbon, oil or gas.  They looked nice and tan as they should. I still have a light miss at idle (1000 RPM), and it doesn't sit steady @ 3k in nuetral, just a slight bob to the tach needle.  I did ride it around the block and it seems smooth running @3k putting around, and it does still take off like a rocket.  
I am new to true street bikes, and anything over 1 cylindar.  Should they run smooth like a car engine?  Its definatly not running bad, Im just a little anal  :monkeymoon: being a new to me bike with about 30K on the odo.  :thanks:

First off, the idle should be 1200-1300 RPM... 1000 is too low.
