i have a 96 n600 its done about 36000 miles when i rev the bike you can hear a ticking . a mate said it was the tensioner i seem to remember reading in a book that they need replaceing but i can't remember when
before i start throwing cash at it what do you think it is. and should i

rideing it. it runs a little bit flat but you hardly notice it

my bandit 4 has the same problem, took it to a garage thinking my valve clearences were out, he checked them and said it was my cam chain knocking the rocker cover coz of the tensioner. not hard to sort, just have to find one....

I'm with wyntrblue. I'm guessing valve clearances. Most likely they are loose, wich is loads better than too tight.

think you got the wrong end of the stick.... my valve clearences were fine, the mechanic thinks its my cam chain tensioner that is duff,

The first step would be to rule out valve noise. Keep in mind, the B6 engine's valves are noisey when in proper adjustment. As someone in another thread said, they'll sound like a bunch of mice with typewriters... and the noise will be uniform. Cam chain noise will not be as uniform and generally makes more noise under changes in rpm or occasional slaps under steady state rpm.

you notice it badly when you let go of the revs and a bit when you accelerate . i no it will have to be done but should i stop rideing it untill it's done

Hey I have a 1983 V-45 Honda thats been making the same noise for the last 20,000 km. Has not blown up yet!
