release tube over pod filter??
« on: October 21, 2005, 01:44:42 PM »
I don't know much about the engine of a motorcycle. I just sold my older Vtwin cruiser for this 2000 Suzuki Bandit 1200S. It came with a Yoshi pipe, K&N Pod Filter, and a stage 2 jetting. Unfortunately no manuals came with the bike.

I am wondering what that sliced ruber tube releases from the engine, is it just air?? or does something drip occasionally?

The tube is placed directly on top of the K&N pod filer, so Im wondering if something that shouldn't be going into the filter is drippping out.

That is more than likely the engine vent, it should becoming out of the head somewhere. It's mostly there to prevent overpressure inside the motor and to exhaust various fumes (such as those from hot oil). Normally it's vented into the airbox, and then recycled into the engine and burnt.

It -is- possible for some oil to drip from the tube, especially if the open end is lower than where it connects to the engine. Hot oil can both splash into it, and oil fumes can condense inside the tube itself.

It doesn't sound like they have the optimal setup, you might want to look into finding a crankcase vent filter to plug into the hose. Autozone should have something that might work.

Thats it, its coming from the head.

So if its normally vented into the airbox, shouldn't it be ok if its just on top of the K&N Pod filter?

It -should-  be fine, but like I said some oil can come out of it and it's a direct line to the insides of your motor. All you'd need is a good cockroach to climb up in there.

Like I said, you should be able to find a crankcase breather filter at autozone for cheap, on the order of less than $10. Relocate the filter so it's higher than the cylinder head and you should be fine.

One of the more common solutions to the breather hose is to put a little filter on the end, something like this:
