Title: Rust problem on Headers
Post by: FreediverGa on January 22, 2006, 08:28:33 PM
I'm getting rust around the clamp area of headers and midpipe join together!  I can clean up the rust with steel wool but what I can put on the Rust to get rid of it.  I know you can get high temp Ceramic paint that I can brush on!  I can't see area while looking at the bike.  I actually have to be on the left side of the bike laying down to see it but I want stop the rust from getting any worse.  Any ideas out there guys?

The problem is they rust from the inside out. So by the time you've seen it, the headers have already rusted through. This is a very common problem in the UK and we have lots of companies that sell stainless downpipes and there are also companies that offer to repair the downpipes for you.

I think you'll only be delaying the inevitable by coating it in something.

Are you sure the rust is actually  'structural', and not some surface rust and/or dirt?  Just wondering.  Can't picture the area, but maybe you  can tap the area with something metal to see if it sounds different from an unrusted area.

No it's surface rust because I cleaned off an area with steel wool already to see how deep the rust was.   I think I can get most of it off with steel wool and small wire brush.  Then polish the hell out of it with mothers polish and see what it does after that!  I was looking at BikeBandit.com and they want alot for new headers Geez!
