Title: Splutter, splutter, stop
Post by: Jacknife on March 11, 2005, 01:43:22 PM
Like I said have have my bike for 6 months but only been able to ride for the last 2 weeks since passing my bike test. So full tank of petrol and an open road, well after a few short trips notch up 196 miles, fuel tap set to primary. Was thinking must get some fuel soon, dont know how far i can get on a full tank.

Just then, splutter, splutter and stop. A little bit upset so turn the fuel tap to reserve. Nothing! tunred over but did not start. after a short walk and push to service station for fuel, filled up and what a suprise the bike started.

so is 196 for a full tank good or bad?

And is there any type of fuel Gauge that can be fitted to the B6 99' :duh:

170 to reserve is what I'm typically seeing, but it depends to where you stop filling the tank too.   ( I should get 210 miles upon empty)

I was told that I should get a minimum of 45 MPG, but am struggling to get above 43 MPG.

Sounds like you got 40-41 MPG, sorry to hear.  What is done to your bike?

I have a 96 B6, stock with 2 shims under the needles.  Going to run a few tanks like this before testing any other changes.

Is the B6 a vacuum activated fuel tap like the B4?

If so, probally even though you turned it to 'reserve' fuel wasn't getting to the carbs and filling them. You can just about crank the battery dead before the engine will generate enough vacuum to fill the carbs. I had the same thing happen on my B4, cruising down the expressway at 80mph and started loosing speed. I managed to coast off an exit ramp and pull over. An inspection of the fuel line showed it was bone dry (which was good, because at first I thought something had broke!). Turned it to prime until the line filled up, flipped to reserve, and rode another 10 miles to a gas station.

According to what I found in the internet, the fuel tank of the B6 is 5.3 gallons. I'll assume that there is a 1 gallon reserve (I'm assuming you still had reserve gas, and just didn't prime the carbs), meaning you burned 4.3g or so (guessing). 196/4.3 =  45.5mpg. That sounds about right, I'd think!

Good thought, Maniac.  If you drained everything out of the carbs and the line, it takes a while to reprime them with the starter.  You should turn the fuel tap to prime for a while first to fill 'em up and then hit the starter.

If you have it on PRI, I'm pretty sure you're sucking off the same tap as RES, just bypassing the vacuum feature of the petcock.

The 1G tank is 5.0 gallons and the 2G is 5.3 (except CA models which have a larger vent space), so figure out your gas mielage and see for yourself.

Like Paul said, I think PRI is "prime".  I flows fuel freely from the bottom of the tank to fill float bowls if they were drained for storage or after a service, etc.
Under normanl conditions it should be set to "ON" and then "RES" as needed.
If you park it with the petcock on PRI, you may run the risk of all the fuel running into the engine and filling the case.

Nice one! did'nt know that will make the change to the "on" position. The reserve may work now!
