Title: Starting issues 2000 600s
Post by: mailman44 on June 29, 2012, 03:09:20 PM
I have a 2000 600s (23000 miles). I am having issues with it starting up each time I try to fire it. Sometimes it fires right up with no problem. Other times the bike makes a grinding or screeching noise and does not start. I had the battery volt and load tested. It came back fine. I have ridden for 5 minutes, turned it off and immediately tried to restart it with only the screeching sound ( no clicking btw). I have left it, came back later and it fires right up. It will start with a push start and also a jump with no issues. Any help?

Sure sounds starter related.  I'm not much help here but do recall other posts about a starter gear needing replacement from time to time.

BTW....   :welcome: to the site - glad you found us.

To add to this, I notice the warmer the bike the less likely I will be able to get it started but once it sits and cools it starts right up.

I have reAd through other threads and am leaning towards it being my starter clutch gear. Does anyone have a good place to buy parts? Also how difficult is it to replace? I am honestly a noob but am mechanically inclined... Lol. In other words I know I could figure it out with a little guidance.

Ron Ayers and Crotchrocket websites have decent prices and an online microfiche for part identification.  I take those internet prices to my dealer and he often meets/beats those prices.  YMMV....

It's a pretty simple job, just d/l the service manual if you don't have one already.
Another thing -  you may not need any parts at all.  The bolt that holds it on is known to back off sometimes.  Especially if the factory or last installer forgot to use Loc-tite... so be sure to torque it per the book and use Loc-tite.

Well I bought and installed a new starter and have the same issue. It actually fired up better but I still had to bump start it to get it going. Once there was gas running through it, it started with less grinding/screeching. Now what?

If it wasn't the starter "screaching" then maybe you need a better/different description of the issue.

Have someone else who rides a bike try it, and see what they think?
