CRACKS IN HUB?
« on: April 14, 2007, 11:39:25 PM »
Today as I was cleaning & checking the chain I noticed what appeared to be spider cracks in the alumumn hub that the sprocket bolts to.  Normally there is a lot of oil, grease, etc. on the hub and I would not have noticed. has anyone else noticed anything like this?  Can not tell for sure if the are cracks of flaws in the finish, that the oil has worked down into.  Will keep an eye on it and see if it appears to get worse.

Clean it REAL good. It's not uncommon for the lube to form skinny little lines of grit and lube that mark and stain the hub. If you've cleaned up real nice and you still suspect it is cracked you can have it dye penetrant inspected to verify, or just replace it if that's not cost effective, or if you are certain it is cracked. I'd think that a cracked one would be pretty rare unless you are putting a lot of shock to it on a regular basis, but since it's a cush drive, it should even take drag race start type loads for a long time with no ill effects.

Mine is exactly what you described.  I have a 2000 model B-12.  I've looked at mine real close.  I've even removed it from the wheel and looked on the other side.  If they're cracks, they certainly don't go all the way through.  I think its just a surface defect in the casting.  I'm not going to worry about it.
