I need help with the silly little turn signal!!
« on: April 30, 2006, 05:26:47 PM »
Sorry for asking a doorknob question but i don't want to hurt the bike.  It fell over and the front left turn signal popped in.  i tried to just pop it back out but it doesn't want to go.  didn't want to force it as i fear it would break.  How do I get it back in?  Poor thing is just kinda laying there pleading with me to do something......

Thanks, guys.

Jim

When it popped in, did it break any bodywork?
I'm not familair with the blinkers on your 3G, but on my 2G, I don't think there's any way for them to pop in without breaking something.

Red:  thanks for the reply - nothing broke but there is a 'ridge' on the tail light that should go on the 'outside' of the fairing and it's been pushed in!  When i gently tug on the tail light to get the ridge back on the outside of the fairing, it won't come.

Should I just use my 8 lb. sledge to fix 'er?

Well, if that's the way it attaches, I'd try a little oil on it and try to get a small section started, then work it around until it's back where it belongs. You may need some kind of small hook-like tool to help it along.

If there's any kind of metal sleeve inside the stalk, you may need to disassemble it to make it more flexible.

There is an exploded view on Ron Ayers web site. It will show you how it comes apart to fix it.

I got it!  Got my big noggin inside the fairing (!) and saw a nut on the inside of the turn signal.  got that off and the back plate popped off - that allowed the rest of the turn signal stalk to scoot into it's place...did the nut back up and that bigger back plate holds the whole thing in place.  Kinda trick, when you think about it, as it holds well but then a firm push (like the driveway coming up at it) will pop it out without breaking it.

Thanks for all your responses, guys and gals! :beers:

Speaking of 3G Bandits, Jimbo, have you posted a pic of your cleverly applied "warrior" scars, yet?  Show all us perfect riders what you did, if you dare!  :stickpoke:

We promise not to ridicule you, unless you put loud pipes on, too!

You know, they wouldn't even show up unless the camera was about 2 ft. away!  Can't believe I just about committed suicide over it!

How about a pic of my thumper instead?  This is the one horse version  :

Or another one I call Yoda on a thumper:

Sanded down the scratches on the Bandit's engine last night and painted over them - then checked the old rattle can I got from the garage and noticed it said, "satin" while the rest of the engine is glossy!   :annoy:   typical self fixit job!  but it actually looks good and unless i mention the fall, nobody notices anything.

thanks a bunch for your tip on the wd!  works like magic, i swear...wish i'd known about that 25 years ago!

the two-tone black on my bandit brings me to today's question:

Which car from the 70's had two 'tones' of black painted on it on purpose straight from the factory??

Not just mirrors but something major!

Super-wedgie to the winner.
